I started straight shaving five years ago at thirty-eight years of age, but had wanted to for some time before that. Finding SRP really made it all possible. there have been other posts and even polls on this subject and we tend to be a little closer to middle aged as a group, but I seem to be seeing more younger gentlemen starting up which is very encouraging.

53 and been going at it for a couple of years. It is fantastic to hear so many younger straight razor users. That shows just how important this forum is.

I am older than many reporting, and honestly there is no historical connection to anyone like my dad that passed this on to me. That would be WWII era. My mom said she remembers her dad using straights, but that is about it.

This post has to make some of the more seasoned members very proud of the fact that there are still real men comming up. These nobel arts will go on.

    Hello,
I started wet shaving about 6-7 years ago when I found my wifes Dovo knife (disposal), she is a hairdresser. I asked "what is this" she told you can shave with it. So, I tried it and here we are. I shaved over three year with that disposal Dovo. Then I was in Dusseldorf and bougth a "real" Dovo special 6/8. It was that time when the Fleet Steer Barber movie was on cinema

But there was an other reson too. My beard is very hard. I had a philishave wich was expencive and a crap. I was using philishave and a gillette. I liked gillette, because it simply was better than philishave. Then I found straight razor and I was like wow, this is great this can cut my beard just like that.

Now I have a hone set and two Sheffield wedges too.

Today was a great day. I was first time in my life at a real barber shop shave. It was very good experience. Here in Helsinki are Nik's Barber Shop. He is a British guy. I have to thank Nik. He told my beard is very hard. This is important to me, now I have also a professional opinion about my beard

    I am year model 1973.

I'm 54 and started shaving with a straight razor back in high school. Back then, there was little if any information or support groups available so I was self taught and mutilated. Fortunately, my first razor was sharp, a Boker, but it was a spike-hence the mutilation.
I do not like the multi blade disposables, they are expensive and it takes two (@ $4ea!!) for me to get a decent shave (BBS) and then I get razor burn from hell. Unless I am on vacation or preparing for wintertime snow, I shave daily with a str8 without any problems. (it's an addiction, I suffer from razor withdrawal for a week when growing a beard)
I am sure everyone here agrees, proper shave preparation and a sharp blade will keep you looking good and feeling great!
my advice (for what it's worth), invest in a high quality straight razor! They are expensive but cheaper than disposables in the long run, and they will last a lifetime. the better the razor, the better the shave, the better your life! Enjoy!
    Best regards to everyone, Bob

I'm 31 and just started straight shaving a few months ago. I figured if I have to shave every day, why not enjoy it! Now I GET to shave everyday

P.S I'm surprised at how many of us (us? I suppose I am now) older gents started so late with Cuttroats and how many more of the younger blokes are already at it. What's old is new again I reckon.
I think I would have started younger but there was no SRP then (no internet either) and very little information available. I probably would have sliced my face off.

I bought my first straight when I was 15 in 1971.
I could not get it sharp enough to shave without pulling and could not find any info to help me along.
Last year I found this site with it's weath of info and started back.
Now I wished I had started collecting them back then, deals were everywhere.

As the 64 implies kids, my last job was hunting dinosaurs. I bought my first straight razor in the summer of 1964 when I was 19. I was living in Ankara, Turkey and going to college in Munich, Germany. The Solingen I bought cost me 75 Turkish Lira, about $7.50 then. I didn't know much about straights and luckily one of my roommates in college shaved with one and honed mine for me and taught me how to strop it. It shaved a lot better after that. The reason I bought it was I got shaved by a Turkish barber and I didn't have to shave for four days afterward. My beard is fuller and stiffer now. I have shaved with straights on and off since and have had to relearn now and then. I started collecting about a year ago and ran into this site recently. What a wealth of information! I shave with a straight everyday now and still get the same old thrill out of it.

    Richard
