I haven't read through this thread because I don't want to be tainted with influence.
My advice to the original question is: Don't Shave for 3 weeks.
People who get their leg cut open and have stiches, or break their leg always have to show how much of a redneck (in the bad sense) man they are by walking around the next day. duh.
Those stitches tear, if only a little bit to show a nice scar. I thought the point of a nice shave was to look nice. why have a scar on your back
I recommend sitting on your wise butt for a week not thinking about your whiskers at all. After that I'd recommend shaving off the excess with an electric trimmer once a week for a few weeks. After that you decide. Most of it will be healed up excellently by then.
The first week is the most important period to do nothing
You might think I'm a jerk putting it that way, but better me then someone else who cares who you get see in person every day.Last edited by icecow; 10-08-2006 at 09:18 PM.

My OS recommended getting off crutches ASAP, which for me was the next day. So, despite removal of two strands of hamstring tendon, and the drilling of three new holes in the lower leg & femur to accomodate the hamstring destined to become my ACL, I was able to ditch crutches the day after surgery.
If following one of the state's leading orthopedic surgeons makes me a redneck, so be it.

The initial 6-8 weeks of strictly no movement may be largely due to removal of bone and the relocation of tendons. If you can skip the reattachment of tissue, this initial part may be decreased.
Unfortunately, X-rays & MRI's can only show so much. Once the doc gets in there he'll know what has to be done. My initial ACL repair was performed with the understanding it might turn into reconstruction depending on what they found.
The 4-6 months recovery time is about normal. Of the 3 guys I train with who have had shoulder work done, one did the rehab in about 3 months (my ACL buddy). The other two had more work done and it took closer to 6 months.
