Thanked: 13245I gotta say this was really one of the exceptional meets, they are always fun and informative but this one was a stand out
It was really great seeing old friends and meeting new ones, and of course extra special having Charlie show up outta the blue,, been since the 2009 Asheville since I saw him in person
The Garlic Knot was as always a kind and generous host many thanks to them..
There never seems to be enough time in the day, more questions and ideas seem to generate more questions and ideas
I always learn so much from watching the new honers work the razors and the stones, it really helps me when I read questions and give advice on the forums..
As many have mentioned already if there is a chance to go to a Meet or sit down over coffee or beers with an experienced person, I cannot recommend it enough to the new guys..
Many thanks to everyone that made this happen already looking forward to next year again..
Logistics/Travis - You were missed my friend, we have to make sure you can make it next year

We had 13 at the get together. About five hours of very educational honing and great camaraderie. Pizza and Garlic knots flowing freely.

I was a little disappointed that I had to leave so early, but thanks to everyone who came out, I enjoyed the company, put some faces to some names, and learned a ton. I'm going to break out the hones today and see if I can put Glen's lessons to use! Can't wait til next year!

Thanked: 1160I wanted to add to the new members in their respective areas that may read this. I've been a member for a few years now and as you may have already figured out, there is ALWAYS something to learn and gain in this realm. The Forum is obviously a wonderful thing to have but, I have learned a lot at this meet . I'm am definitely gonna try to make it next year. What you can't get from written word or video you can make up for at the meets and then some. Like Glen stated, so much more can be learned face to face . For all you new guys heading to your local meet up's , have a great time and soak it up !

Thanked: 0Well, I got home yesterday evening and made myself a newspaper strop, since my new leather one won't be here until next week, and I didn't want to wait Practiced a little and then gave it 60-70 laps this morning. Shaved both sidesburn area, cheeks and neck, WOW! Did the chin with my DE and right now the SR areas are still really smooth, maybe not BBS, but smoother than the DE areas. One really tiny nick, didn't even bleed, just a small red spot. I used my dominant (right hand), I'll try the left, but I don't feel too confident about that . . . we'll see. The journey begins
Thanks again Glen for the excellent hone job on my flea market Genco.

Thanked: 5WOW! WOW! WOW!!!!!
Had a two day beard at the get-together. Fished yesterday, and finally shaved today, yup, a four day growth. Glen touched up the two razors he had honed a couple of months ago. They were sharp, but I have not had a comfortable first pass on a straight in over fifty years, and I am certain that my memory is very crisp on that point I have been getting "reasonably" decent shaves recently, with both the razors Glen honed and those I have honed, but still struggled to bear the first pass, everything pulled. Second pass whatever additional directions I could manage, and that cleaned things up to an acceptable shave. Now, the hardest of my Razors to shave with has been my new Dovo. Every time I shaved with that razor I looked like I had gone ten rounds with a Bobcat named "Sugar Ray"; man did he have a quick jab. Glen finished this razor with a Thuringen stone when he first honed it, and yes it was sharp, but definitely not comfortable on my face. Yes, my skills have greatly improved since I first shaved with it. This time, Glen finished it on the Zulu Grey he brought. The razor simply glided through a four-day beard. Unbelievably different. Think I may have to buy one of those.
Glenn: thanks again for all your effort on our behalf. I learned a lot, particularly your lack of obsession on pressure on the hone. "Use enough pressure/torque/contortions of the elbow to keep all the edge on the stone" is the lesson I came away with and that matches my conclusion on the problem razor I brought along. Light pressure does not mean the weight of a cobweb on the stone, it also means not to flex the blade. Also, if I didn't leave enough to cover my share of the check, please send me a PM and I'll take care of it. Thanks again for spending your time and knowledge with us. Hope your mother had a happy birthday.

So I put Glen's techniques to work on my SRP razor that had been giving me trouble on a previous rehone attempt... I went "down two" and put it on the Naniwa 8K, then up to the 12K, and shaved with it this morning. All I can say is I feel like I've cracked the code! I've had honing successes in the past, but this one felt like a bigger victory! I'll echo what has been said time and again, sitting down and seeing an expert demonstrate honing techniques face-to-face is priceless knowledge, and I for one can't wait for the next opportunity. Thanks Glen!
