For those interested in the NYC Meet-up: we're looking at the week of February 21st and we're still open to suggestions for a place in or near the city. We have a few in mind, but if someplace you know of might work, please post it or PM me, mikedelo or rmaldon240.
One idea that has been thrown around is trying to hijack a barbershop. We've already talked to one place in Brooklyn, but that didn't work out (too small... and they said no). I'm going to try to check with my usual spot, maybe we'll get lucky.
I'm glad to see a pretty good response. Once we settle down details we'll post it here so people can begin to make solid plans.

Just saw this thread and I'd be interested in trying to swing it. Granted, I live in Southern Vermont but I can take a bus from Albany into NYC.
As far as suggestions, would asking the Art of Shaving to host be worth it? I realize you're asking an established store to have some random people (in their eyes) use their facility. Just a crazy hair-brained idea that might be interesting.

We tried to meet to check out a place last week, but my schedule's been a bit weird lately because I was moving. There is a place in Brooklyn that's available for us to use, but we're unsure if the bathroom is a suitable size.
We certainly will be working on finding a place. Bear with us and we'll update you soon.

Thanked: 60After getting some odd responses and feedback from a couple of barber shops it looks like we are gonna go with 1 Front St. Front Street Restaurant & Lounge
1 Front St is located on the corner of Old Fulton St and Water st. Front Street Restaurant & Lounge
We have the place from 12-4 on Sunday February 21st. We may have to work around the bathroom issues.
Please PM bingobango, mikedelo or myself with your email address and/ or a phone number (in case of any last minute changes) if you are planning on coming. Also, let us know if you are bringing anything in particular (hones, strops, etc)
Look forward to meeting you all.

NYC Area Meet up - 2/21/10
Alright Ladies and Germs, it looks like this thing is starting to roll forward!
We've gotten a few responses and my fellow organizers and I have talked about a little schedule so people know what to expect. I'm going to relist some of the info from Rob's post, and list some new stuff to have it in one place.
First of all, the meet will be at Front Street Restaurant & Lounge located in Brooklyn, NY. Here is the map and directions as listed on the website. For those of you who don't know, parking in Brooklyn should be a little easier, but give yourself a few minutes to hunt down a spot. The meet will be held on Sunday, February 21st from 12 - 4 PM. We hope that those who are coming can try to be prompt so that there's time get some good show & tells, demonstrations and a little "try my gear" fun in. Some of the members who have decided to join us have already graciously offered to bring along some razors, strops, hones, creams and other goodies for us to check out. If you would like to bring some gear along, please let us know so we can get an idea of what's coming.
We're hoping we can follow this tentative "schedule" for the meet. Don't think that the times are strict, we'll probably mix things up based on how the group is feeling as we go along.
12:00 - 12:30 - Meet & Greet - Everyone can introduce themselves as we wait for folks to trickle in.
12:30 - 1:30 - Honing/Stropping demonstrations - Guys who are bringing gear will probably give a quick rundown of how they hone or strop their razors, what they like/dislike, etc. Maybe we can even get to see a razor get the bevel set, or an almost there razor get a touch up.
1:30 - 2:30 - Hone/Strop Discussion and Q&A - Everyone can ask questions about what they just saw, tips for getting started on your own, and any other questions that might have been burning in their mind. Again, the time isn't strict, so maybe we'll do some stropping demo then a Q&A for that before moving on to honing.
2:30 - ??? - Show & Tell or free for all - If anyone wants to show off a new razor or talk about their favorite strop, we'll leave some time for that. We all love bragging about our new toys so feel free to bring along stuff you want to parade around. Also, we're going to work on setting up a place to shave. Anyone who wants to try a new shave cream or discuss their shaving technique should have a chance to do that.
I also want to point out a few rules/thoughts for those who plan to attend. Sorry if I sound like a Dad, but we want to be sure everyone feels comfortable at this event. The main point is - be a respectful gentleman (Or lady! ) and have a good time.
- This is NOT a trade show or a sales booth - it's a friendly get-together. If anyone decides to discuss purchasing, trading or selling a razor at the meet-up, that is completely separate from this meet. The members who organized the meet are not responsible for any sales or barter transactions that happen at the meet, and we are not endorsing any products or sellers.
- Members who bring their own equipment are not expected or required to lend their things to other members. We ask that everyone respect the decisions of other members regarding their property - even if it means you don't get to play with their cool stuff. Some of this equipment is delicate and expensive and if someone doesn't want to lend it out, please respect their decision and don't make a fuss. If you don't feel comfortable lending something out, just be honest and say you'd rather not.
- Members who do bring razors, strops, hones, etc. are responsible for their own property. If it gets lost, broken or stolen, the guys who organized the meet up are not going to be responsible. If you decide to lend something and it breaks, that will be between you and the person who borrowed it. For those who do borrow stuff, treat it like it's your own and return it in the same or better condition.
- If you would like to shave, hone, strop or anything else, it would be wise to bring the gear that is required. We can't promise that someone else will have a razor/shave soap/aftershave for you to use and you might be left in the cold (with stubble).
- If you do shave, you're going to be responsible for any injuries that result. We're going to try to bring a bunch of rubbing alcohol for cleaning the razors, but cleaning them properly is up to you.
- This is a bar/restaurant that serves alcohol, but no one is required or expected to drink. Anyone who does drink is expected to do so responsibly. Again, the organizers aren't going to be held responsible if you do something bad. If you plan on holding a razor, you should probably not drink at all or keep it to a minimum. If you plan on driving, no alcohol is the way to go.
- Finally, we hope that everyone has a good time meeting other members and learning more about straight razor shaving. Please be respectful to other members, their property and the owner of the fine establishment that so kindly allowed us to use the place.
That just about covers everything for now. Again, if you would like to come please PM me with your email address and/ or a phone number (in case of any last minute changes). Also, please let us know if you are bringing anything in particular (hones, strops, etc) or if there's a demonstration you'd like to do. So far no one's offered to cover restoration and a quick chat or demo could be really cool.
Thanks to everyone for their interest so far, and we hope to see a lot of your there!Last edited by BingoBango; 01-19-2010 at 10:36 PM.
