I really didn't get what would be included in this meeting.
Will there be actual demonstrations of shaving and stropping?
Will there be a senior guy there to answer the questions?
I'm in Greenpoint adn have easy access to wherever so let's
get a place and time and do this!

There will definitely be demos of anything that people are interested in, provided someone there has the knowhow and gear. I'm planning to attend and will be bringing razors, hones, my strop, some soap and cream, brush and scuttle (maybe...), and basic razor cleaning stuff. I would be happy to demonstrate how to use anything I bring (so honing, stropping, making lather, shaving, basic razor cleaning).

Among the hones I have (I'll probably bring them all, but who knows) are a King 220/1k, Norton 220/1k, Naniwa 600 (I think...), 5k, 8k, BBW/Coti glued combo, Nakayama (J-nat coticule is what I call it), and an Asagi. I also have a DMT6C and slurry stones for the BBW/coti and Nakayama. I'd be willing to let guys try most of these hones and would be happy to spend some time honing other people's razors in order to demonstrate honing (if there is any interest in having me do so).

My basic cleaning kit includes synthetic steel wool, toothpicks, qtips, microfibre cloth and MAAS - I can show how I use these things and guys can try it out on their razors.

I think that's all I'll be bringing that is worth mentioning...

By the way, I'm bringing locking boxes to keep all my gear in, and I suggest others consider the same. No offense, but I've not met any of you guys in person and I've not seen most of you around the forum too much, so it's good to be safe.

    Default that sounds awesome!

I definitely have a few questions on many topics from how to get out the little black spots on older razors to if it is really necessary to go over 8K on a hone and if the prays really work on strops.
Anyway, let's pick a day so
I can start picking your brain!

Kevin - There's a big post on page 5! It has all the details for the meet: Date, time, place, list of things being covered, etc. etc. PM me if you plan on coming.

Updates will be posted here as they develop. So far Holli4Pirating is probably the most knowledgeable guy coming, but there's about a month before the meet so who knows....?

    Default this is great

I can bike to this place in no time and since I will be starting this week(hopefully today!)I'm sure I will be full of questions and maybe even
a little input of my own.
Tip #1 for a new honer like me would be to do a few strokes in a row on each side of the blade instead of the usual back and forth so you can get a sense of keeping the blade flat(harder than it looks)by following the wave of water and making sure it is even. IF you go back and forth you can't get a rhythm or pattern formed for muscle memory because each stroke is different. That is of course if that is forbidden for some honing reason.
Anyway, I just think this is a great idea and I want to thank the original person who came up with the idea...THANKS!
I will be looking forward to this.

Exclamation Update for NYC Meet on 2/21/10

Alright folks, couple of quick little updates:

We've hit double digits in the head count, so this ought to be a lot of fun! A few folks are offering to do some demos, so as things come together we'll post any updates. Please be patient as the other members decide what they're willing to do. I promise I will post updates.

On another note, I'm glad to see members posting their interest in coming on this thread, but please PM me if you want to come. If you've already PM'd me, you should be on the list. If you have not PM'd me to say you're coming, sending me a message will make sure I've got you on the list (include your name, what you might bring, and if you want, email address or phone number for last minute stuff). About a week out I'll go down the list and confirm with everyone by PM and make a post requesting any members to confirm last minute plans. Getting an accurate head count will help getting everything set up (i.e. chairs, tables, etc.).

I'm really glad to see we're getting such a great response! Stay tuned.

Just curious if you guys who are taking names are going to post who has RSVPed anywhere to the thread. I'm just curious. It may also help me decide what to bring and what to leave home.
