I definitely want to do the pattern welding class. If I need to do more than reply here let me know.
I have time off Friday through Sunday so any combination would be fine to me.
Do you have a list of things needed/recommended to bring for the forging. I always wear my steel toed boots so I wouldn't forget them!

Thanked: 995I think the welding class starting on Friday and finishing Saturday is the best. We'll get the bulk of what we need done by Friday evening and can play a little on Saturday and not miss any of the secrets of the razor whether that is Saturday or Sunday or both. We might try to get some pieces done and heat treated. We'll blindfold a couple of honesters and see if they can tell by feel what they're working on.
Anyone coming to work in the black shop needs eye protection, ear protection, a hat, either old clothes that will take a small burn or two or a shop apron, good leather shoes, e.g. not flammable cordura - steel toes are cool but not necessary in an absolute way and some gloves - good old cotton gloves work. I usually work in jeans and T shirt and haven't had any big burns in several years. I'll be watching over everyone's shoulders until I'm convinced you won't kill yourself or anyone else.
And I should say here: Blacksmithing is a dangerous avocation. It's hot and dirty. You participate of your own free will. There's no problem or shame in saying I want to watch for a while. You have to know your own limitations.
I'll have spares of some of these things too. If you have your own favorite hammer and tongs, bring them. It's much better to work with familiar tools. Ask more questions if you have them.

I'll try to make it again this year for the razor stuff. The forging sounds pretty cool but will just have to wait for another time.

Thanked: 335I'm curious where we are with the meet and the heat and beat dates plus a look at the list of approved beginner smiths. Alas, I think I've been too flippant about the smithing for serious consideration for attending the hammer-in, but at least would like to attend the razor lather and strop coffee klatch.
Details would be greatly appreciated.

Thanked: 4I'm pretty interested in attending at least the razor portion of this. I'm still very new to the straight razor world, so it would be great to see some proper honing techniques etc. and meet some other enthusiasts around here. I'd be super interested in learning about the smithing portion as well, perhaps I'd be able to watch some on Saturady?

Thanked: 995Some of you haven't asked for directions. Send me a PM if you need em.
Motels:
Best Western Saratoga Inn
31591 64th Avenue
Cannon Falls
(507) 263-7272
There can be competition with the horsefolks who are in town for auctions. Thus the price can go up if you wait too long.
Caravan Motel
Caravan Motel
31913 64th Avenue
Cannon Falls
(507) 263-4777
This is the trucker's motel. Cheaper but clean and well run. They get good reviews from other folks who've stayed there during events at the shop.
Prices would be less if you bunk together. These places are less than 3/4 mile from the shop.“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power.” R.G.Ingersoll
