The EF is rated by DMT as 1200, but because of the abrasive it uses, I find it to be more aggressive than any 1k I have ever used.

I think that a lot of people under estimate the importance of bevel setting. Now I know that different things work for different people and what I do is probably overkill for most honers but I use a DMT600, a Shapton Ceramic Pro 1k and then a Shapton Ceramic Pro 2k.

    Hmm...

I'm just about to run out the door, but if any of you are willing to wait until this evening/tomorrow, I'll be able to provide some food for thought on #1000 grit stones/plates.

I've only got 19 or so of them, all thoroughly tested, most with documentation and a mostly written up explanation (4 parts) of the findings.

I'm quite sure some will not agree with what I've found, but that's ok.

(Especially when the Chosera doesn't even rank in the top 5 without even taking into account it's price. Sorry.)

Current low-grit bevel setters: DMT coarse, fine, extra-fine; Norton 1K; Chosera 1K. Still experimenting, but the DMT 1200 and the Chosera are my current weapons of choice. The cutting action of the DMT doiesn't bother me. A few passes on the Norton or Naniwa quickly corrects that.

What the 1200 mesh (9 micron) extra fine DMT has is diamonds that are aggressive since they are so hard AND their shape. If they are using diamond crystals, most are shaped like 2 pyramids welded base to base in shape. Whereas the Coticule that uses garnets, which are not quite as hard as diamonds are more rounded, soccer ball looking crystals. They have micro facets but their rounded shape tends to give less dig and bite into a piece of metal, and I think that would be their advantage. Once a diamond has worn down just a bit, it is also hard but less pointed to ease up a bit on the heavy scoring. Somewhere I read that most bevels set at the 600 - 800 grit level with DMT should be able to pop hair with a HHT 0-1 or sometime HHT3. It is the finer hones that get that boost up there for absolute down and dirty edge creation. But, it has to start at 1K level and be sharp there. The rest is refinement.

Bring it on! Now that the rest of these enablers have got me going on a good bevel setter I would love to see your stuff!

    Thanks, guys! I think?

Look forward to your input & welcome to SRP Schtoo.

Yeah, after posting that last night I thought if this is for knives than that is a different story. Whereas I know the Bester's are highly regarded for knives, you don't see them mentioned much for straights.
