Thanked: 116Well written ZIB and it makes total sense. I think there are a few guys out there that you can trust. One is a member here and he tests all the stones prior to selling them. I made it out without spending $1500 as you suggested in that post but did also see stones in that price range.
You really hit the nail on the head when it comes to the reasons for purchasing a stone. Big advantage is the availability of these stones compared to vintage escher/thuris or coticules in this size.

By definition, if you can only get a good edge off your Ozuku asagi by using a kiita slurry, then your edge is an edge created with the kiita, not the asagi. A stone so hard that it will not cough up a slurry will not contrubute very much to the edge fromation during a honing session where a softer kiita slurry is interjected, the softer slurry will be the dominate factor.
Have you tried using a diamond nagura? A diamond plate will free up the asagi's slurry so it can become the dominate grit. Try TheAxMethod with a DiaNagura to learn just how effective your base stone is in honeing a razor. It could be a better stone then you think.
