Yup and a violin is just a box with strings on it!
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

    Wait, Pat.

    What?

Lynn didn’t break out a Coticle and hold a séance, burn some candles or sage, a fog machine, at least?

What the hell kind of Wizard is he?

Yes, but a mandolin is a nightmare!!

(It's funny that violins are mentioned. I know a maker of violins, guitars, violas, cellos, viola da gambas, spinets and harpsichords. I don't know that he's ever complained about any of them being hard to make, but he mentioned that mandolins are deceptively complicated. He's also toolmaker, and I can't get him to experiment to see if he can make razors, but I'd bet he could've made some fine ones in his prime. )

What I'm slowly getting at is that if the stones are decent stones and suitable for the task, honing a good razor is not remotely as difficult as even carving a single scroll on a violin. If the stones are subpar, then the method of not removing the edge has to be used to have a really fine edge, and one has to suffer through some rough shaves until the linen and strop have created a good edge.

Simplicity & ease are not interchangeble. The act of honing a razor is as simple or difficult today as it was 30 years ago for me.
The ease with which I do it has changed.

Making ethernet cables, getting those tiny wires in the right sequence at both ends & getting them all the way home in the plug. Now that's difficult....
