A rescale and hone, for one of our newest members, John. AKA..Audels1. Also, our April winner of the monthly giveaways.

Factory edge was no where close, and had a very slight frown.

    Bevel set...1000 Chosera.

    Progression..
    Butterscotch, Washita.
    Light Blue, Thurigan. Sluury-water.

    Finisher..
    Blue/Green Escher. B/D. Slurry-Water

    Test shave..
Above, what I expected for modern steel. Very smooth and comfortable, like vintage steel.

A little experiment for the upcoming weekend shave, took my Iwasaki back to the Suehiro 20K I then finished the edge on a 0.1-micron lapping film which is the equivalent to 60K using some mineral oil for lubrication, the bevel looks amazing under the loupe, but the proof will be in the pudding and how it shaves.

Try adding a piece of copy paper under the film for your finish laps. The wet paper will flex enough to slightly convex the bevel and edge.

Just that little bit of convexing will make the edge smoother. Sounds crazy but it works.

A 1um lapping film edge on paper is a very nice and crisp shaving edge.

I have used a few drops of Smith’s or Ballistol with good results.

Honed up one of my Heljestrand MK 31 razors.

    Naniwa Professional 1K -> 3K -> 5K
Then onto the BBW dry, then Coti dry

Finish with 1 layer of tape on a La Grise Coticule on water with the lightest pressure possible.

Shave was amazing, very keen, but super smooth. I'm actually surprised by how keen it is and how easily it shaved.

After trying many different finishers I've found my favorite one and got them to work for me (after many trials and errors)

I'm thinking about finishing each razor of my 7-day set of MK 31s on a different Coticule.
I enjoy them that much and my skin tolerates these stones very well. I dig, I dig.

I've been playing around with a new stone that came in from Japan, I haven't seen this stone available in the UK or Europe, the stone and its composition and how it feels remind me very much of a Naniwa Snow White, the stone with a Shrimp printed on it, a very fine stone no soak just spray and go, I said years ago I wished that Naniwa made the Snow White range in a 12K, well it looks like they do, I love the old Naniwa Super Stone, this feels and looks a little different, size 210 x 70 x 20mm, here's a short video I made after honing my Iwasaki on this stone, very positive feedback I am impressed.

Here's an update on this stone, OK, I have honed 5 razors with this stone and shaved off one, I can say to all prospective buyers, If you already own the older Naniwa 12K don't buy this stone, there is no gain or advantage, it's just an equal the only reason you may want to buy it, it's the 20mm over the normal 10mm Super stones, as I hone a lot of razors this won't go to waste it's a good back up a spare stone for me.

First three of seven, from our giveaway guy, Gasman.

Some are his, some for the giveaway. Don't know which are which, but he said hone um any way I want.

Sooo. All got new bevels from the 1k Chosera.
    My typical progression
    Butterscotch, Washita.
    Light blue Thurigan. Slurry- Water.

    Then each their own finisher.

Oxford wasfinished on a Black Ark., and just water. Was also this mornings shave. A bit crisp, but comfortable.

The Voogd was finished on the Blue/Green Escher, slurry-water. Lead pipe, shave. Just blissful.

The Engstrom, frameback was finished on a Coti, slurry- water. Edge looks incredible, under the 40x loupe, and seems to pass my HHT, flawlessly.

    True test yet to come....

Does the shave of the 12k feel smoother than your old 20k G ?
