I seriously thought about buying one of those, but after trying one I found it to be much more awkward than a loupe. The real convenience of the loupe is having it at the honing bench right next to the tape and scissors, very easy to give a quick wipe and check the edge without putting the razor down - and no fiddling with a focusing mechanism. The 30x lens is more than adequate for at least 95% of my needs, and the 60x is there if I really feel the need to see something in more detail. That being said, if I find a problem, I don't bother examining it in too much detail, I just hone it out and keep moving. I also have a USB microscope, but use it almost exclusively for forum photos.

Yea, that scope works well, Radio Shack used to carry it, or a version, but most stores no longer stock it.

These two work well, are inexpensive and have good battery life.

I just ordered one of each. See what works best I guess.
They're not very much, so it's not a big deal

False edge sounds like a safe assumption. Perhaps you can even see it without any magnification, just using a good light source. This was happening to me as well with the very first blade I honed. I was using a very aggressive 8K stone and probably doing twice as many strokes as necessary.
As the time passes, so we learn.

My best guess would be to much pressure and your edge crumbled off. Corner the edge on a hone and try again with less pressure and tape if you didn't the first time and test the edge every 15 laps on the 1k. As soon as it cuts arm hair easily on the 1k move up, keep checking often and as soon as you perceive a difference on a hone move up

You can also drag a piece of toilet paper lightly across the bevel. If there's much of a false edge you can feel it

    Cheers, Steve

I just got one that is the larger version on the left. As far as focussing and zoom, I usually set it and leave it. Adjust the blade until I can see clearly. Someone posted on here a "how-to" to attach foam on the bottom so you don't muck up the edge, just been using my fingers to keep it away until I find it again....
