Thanked: 110Adivice
Hello fella's... Hope everybody enjoyed the weekend.. So im having a little bit of trouble getting this razor to a nice keen edge.. Its a Sheffield Joseph Haywood & Comfy.. Half Hollow and has a thick n heavy spine.. When I first got it I sent it to Nates Straights.. When it got home it had a great final edge.. I did notice they put a quite wide edge.. Before taking it to the stone it was serviceable but needed touching up.. Went with 1 layer and to the SS 12000. After a number of sets of X- Strokes alnost no difference if any at all. Next ones i decided to lap the 12000 with a 180dmt and went at it again doing circles and x-strokes to around 50 total.. Again check and the same as before.. I decide to drop to 8000 stone and end with the 12000.. Dont know how many circles and strokes i did but it should have been plenty.. Still same result.. While checking with loupe nothing bad looking.. Bevel is good and with all the time on stone i didnt notice a second bevel.. Since the edge is not worse and should be no reason to drop to 4000 im wondering if thats what i need to do or is there something i might be doing wrong? The blade is a little frowny and i have not done a lot of rolling x-strokes before but have no problem trying if anyone thinks i would get results?.. Thanks for any advice and sorry about the long post.. SMW

Lots of hone wear on that one probably need more tape or send to gssixgun- its hard to get a straight bevel which you don't have with that much uneven honeware

Thanked: 4829Jiffy marker your bevel and give it two strokes on the 12K. I bet you are not reaching the edge and just honing on the shoulder of the bevel. Add tape until you get the edge on the hone

Thanked: 3215You are honing on the stabilizer and the tang, which is why you have the deep cuts into the spine, the sharp heel hook, massive wide heel bevel and double bevel.
You will have to correct the heel, or it will form a complete hook. It is sharp enough now to cut you.
It is easy to correct and will make honing much easier. You still have to pay attention and keep the stone in front of the stabilizer.
You will need at least 2 layers of electrical tape to make up for lost steel at the spine. It was probably a smiler and should be again. A rolling X stroke can bring it back,
Straight strokes and lots of pressure caused the frown and added to the heel hook.
Do not go lower than 1k with 2 layers of tape. Fix the heel and reprofile the edge to a smile or at least remove the frown.
Fix the heel, (How to correct/re-profile a heel)l. It is quick and easy.
Remove the frown, (Make me smile).Last edited by Euclid440; 02-18-2019 at 03:43 AM.

It'd be so much easier to just opt. for a better razor, than waste your time and money on that poor, uneven, overhoned, thing. Add it to the collection for wind chimes. Seriously..!

Thanked: 110I would take you advice and pitch it... But! Honing my razors is my last step to complete this crazy circle of SR shaving.. Been at this for 3+ years and way to early i purchased stones thinking i could do it all from the start.. Uhh that didnt take long to realize that was not going to happen and put the Stones away.. About 6 months ago it was time and slowily developed my skills to do all of my razors from bevel to shave ready (15 razors).. All of those are either bought new or in very good vintage comdition so they were pretty easy to get nice edges.. Just a lot of practice and learning my stones... This razor does not get much use and it will work great as a practice razor to leaen on.... When i am done with it and it will fit your wind chimes (it is heavy too) ill semd it to you on the house

Thanked: 3215Yea, it’s pretty trashed, but if you corrected the heel, removed the frown, made it a smiler and perfected your X stroke, you will learn a lot that will help you later.
As said, you don’t have much to lose. It’s never going to be a looker.
Read those threads, take you time, if you need more help, holler.
