I agree with you. This wasn't a "normal" razor. Long story short I should have taken it to a belt sander. After this project one is at the top of my wish list. I was working on a pattern welded blade that I got as a hardened/heat treated blank. I finished it hand sanding and left the edge to thick and the blade to wide for the spine. I etched it and started to hone. I figured it was wide and used 3 pieces of tape at first. The bevel got pretty wide and I went to 5 pieces of tape. The included angle is much better. I have a servicable edge on it now and stopped for the time being. What I should do in the future is butternife the edge back at least 3/16 inch and start over. I am not going to do that without a sander! If I got $1.00 an hour for the time in this project I could probably afford one. All in all it has been a frustrating yet enjoyable learning experience. I also did my first domed washers on this one but that is another story.

It is getting warmer outside...perhaps another 30 days.... and the belt sander in the garage will be repaired. Your welcome to use it.

Hey Randy, In about 30 days I may be ready to give it another try. I made my first hanging strop today and started on a loom style one. When its warmer I can hone on the front porch and my wife maybe won't be able to hear it over the street noise.

My wife who is a wonderful woman and a teacher was off last week. Her and a freind went off for the night and when she came back she brought me a Duram Duplex razor. very intersting. I got a few origional blades and found that i could go to Home Depot and buy ones that would "fit". Tonight I thought that I would try and hone one of those on my Chinese 12K.

OMG! I sounded like scratching finger nails on a chalk board. It irritated me. She was certainly right this time! I will wait until she is gone before trying this again.

I should have retired 5 years ago, but I didn't because I'm married.
