I respectfully (truly, with respect for your skill and knowledge) disagree. I find that good, sharpened, honed and stropped steel is the same, regardless of the shape of the blade.

You must have a higher expectation of your kitchen knives than I do of mine if they are equal to a shave ready razor..

In my earliest years I worked for a German traditionally-trained chef who'd literally grown up in the kitchen. Regarding edges and teeth, he told me that teeth in edges were for people who couldn't sharpen but had to cut tomatoes anyway.

It makes complete sense that even though knife sharpening methods could technically work to shave with, you wouldn't want to...purely on a comfort and closeness level.

Think of a mach 3 (or whatever other disposable razor blade) and compare the shave you would get with a brand new head, with that of a head that you've used for a month. Both will still technically shave your beard, however, one will quite obviously give you a better shave.

I think that this is the point that some people are missing here.
Yes, you can technically take a sharp kitchen knife or machete to your beard and, yes, it will "shave"...but that's the difference, a shave as in it's cutting your whiskers but still leaving some amount of stubble, and a shave as in BBS.

So you're maintaining that the essence of the straight razor is it's "razorness", and that no other piece of steel, no matter how good and how well sharpened can do the job unless the Gods have imbued it with the spirit of razorality? :-)

So you're maintaining that the essence of a Violin is it's "Violinness", and that no other instrument, no matter how good and how well made can do the job unless the Gods have imbued it with the spirit of Violinaity ????

    Pretty dumb statement huh ????
I guess in a pinch you could use a Guitar as a Violin but hey that ain't what it has been carefully designed to do over many years of craftsmanship

That is in essence the same as what you are saying defined in your area of expertise
