Many good looking stones here! I'm off to see if I can join the group. Hida tools in the bay area has a nice selection, I'll have to hide the receipt from the intelligent woman in the house though ha!
Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

A little background: I'm new to honing having successfully honed only two full hollow straights. So I honed a genco wedge on my naniwas to shave ready and I wanted to finish it on a smooth jnat of undetermined (obviously) grit. I did about 90- 100 laps using thick, down to no slurry. I shaved with it just now and while I got a dfs, it was not smooth and tended to pull a little. I need to add I was playing around with the stone and made a slurry with a Zulu grey natural. Why didn't I get a good shave? Take away all the other variables- stropping, angle of attack, lather- as im pretty sure they're all good. What do you guys think went wrong and what should I do now to correct the blade? Btw, I stropped 30 on crox and 120 on leather. My question,is out to any and all takers and I thank anyone who responds in advance!

As Isaid before you need to try with jnat slurry and see how it works. It is a learning process

Ok I get it, you were absolutely right, however, after doing all those laps can I use the jnat slurry without overhoning it? (I really do get it- that wasn't meant to be snarky or anything- lol.)

If you are new to honing, my first guess is a problem at bevel set, unless you have a really fast finisher & managed to overhone into a burr at finish stage or used too much pressure for the same result.

As I said just try it out and see what happens, this is going to take some experimenting, and you will have to go trough the paces.

I don't think it's the bevel- though it was a wedge and it took longer to set, I eventually got to and shaved off of the 8k- I'm just getting the same results off of the next level up. I mean obviously I could be wrong but the bevel is popping hairs and I did get a shave and it is close enough for DFS, everything else seems to click except for the smoothness factor.

Ok, I'll letcha know how it goes! I like honing and working with the stones- it's very interesting to me (I used to teach earth science so I guess it's innate in me!)I just don't wanna ruin any blades or my stones for that matter. Thanks main!

What is you next level up? the Jnat ? If you did everything perfectly & the planets have aligned & nothing changes, you may simply be at the limits of that particular razor or, worse case scenario the stone is no better than an 8k, but that's not likely.
IMHO, the number of brilliant shaving wedges out there are balanced by a lot of ordinary shaving wedges especially the ones that rust has taken a hold of at some point.

I seriously doubt I did everything perfectly! I'd like to think I'm getting the gist of it though, but I believe that it's just what you and mainaman have been saying- I just have to keep experimenting until it clicks. My first starting point is to try finishing with the proper nagura, and I'll go from there. Again, thank you guys for the responses and the guidance! I only wish I didn't have to wait two days to test shave again! I have the beard growth of a 12 year old boy....
