Thanked: 5I've got a few spring assisted knives. The only way you can get in trouble for the knife is if it's button activated. Otherwise it really comes down to how the cop is feeling that day :P If you're really concerned with it being close to a switchblade and want a folder that is quick to open look into getting the CRKT M16 or M21 series. Both are great knives, are quick deploying, and have no springs involved. They're opened simply by the force of your hand deploying the "flipper" as they call it. All it is is a tab of metal that sticks out at the base of the spine so when you apply downward force to it it pushes the blade up and out of the grip.
