Anthony Hopkins was born and bred in Industrial south Wales Port Talbot, just a Stones throw from Richard Burton in Pontrhydyfen, and is every bit as much a proud Welshman as Burton, but there can be a large amount of snobbish resentment from a small section of Welsh speakers towards non Welsh speakers and Burton was certainly one of them, and all I will say Wales greatest poet wrote exclusively in English, very many of the greatest Welsh people and champions of Wales never spoke Welsh.“Wherever you’re going never take an idiot with you, you can always find one when you get there.”

Thanked: 983At least the stats are showing an increase in the number of Welsh speakers these days. I hope the trend continues myself, and that the next generation of fine poets create their works in both languages.

I stand corrected about Hopkins' ancestry. But I will stand firm on Dylan THomas gave the better reading of his work. Hopkins, as an actor, is skilled in imparting the, hopefully, inner sense of a poem with the authors intent, or the essence of a character brought to life from the written page. His reading may be more dramatic but I believe, in all cases, an actor impart with an artificial skin. A poet, or painter, or whatever the creative art, their rendition will always contain the original spark of intent. Case in point. Jackson Pollack is credited with an advancement in art with his "dribble" painting. Many people have copied his style but were never good at it because they saw the technique, not the creative spark that drove him to produce what he did. Un rant.

I have a subliminal feeling that we are working on it, The imp of an author of this thread seems to have struck a spot in us, the majority of responders, to use this thread for a lot of things. It should be moved to the Conversation section cause it's way, way past beginning straight razor shaving.
