I'm with Kevin on this it's like a festering wound you only have to scratch the surface and it's there, I think the republicans have moved on but I don't think the hard line Unionists ever will I've always been of the opinion that the whole of Ireland belongs to the Irish and the English were always illegal occupants, they had to hand over independence to most of it's colonies and now it's time to hand over Northern Ireland as it never ever belong to them.

Then again, why leave this little corner of the bar? Grab another stout for yourself and I'll have one too, and what about a good sing-a-long? Maybe some 'rounds', Old John Brown is Dead and Gone or maybe Row Row Row Your Boat?

I don't understand why the English push the point, it's clearly a 'That's pride fu&*ing with you' thing... I mean, where would we be if they stuck to their guns with all the OTHER places they invaded? Down here in Australia they sort of just left us to it, with a mandatory visit every now and again and a few left over relics. Actually, I have no idea if they invaded Ireland, did they?

I have no idea about history, really, but look what they did to the Chinese, basically became drug peddlers so they could get the tea, seems pretty despicable, really... And then they killed the Indians (both types), the Aboriginals, etc etc, chopped people's heads off if they didn't convert to Christianity, pretty ruthless they way I see it. And then they market themselves as kindly little hobbit type creatures with pretty tea cups, lace and fine shaving soaps...

If only life was that simple Jamie.
If we joined the republic, even if we had the majority of the north voting on it, we would still have carnage on the straight as small groups of hard line loyalists would begin a bloody campaign all over again.
My political views have softened greatly since I had my own family and I would give anything to maintain what little peace we have.
We can't change the past so we just have to accept the present and hope for a better future.
    Now who's being philosophical?!

Oh, of course, not that there's anything wrong with that, this is a very nice group of fellows you've gathered here, most are my friends...

Yeah, I seem to post my random thoughts on this thread as I don't think there is an appropriate section for my ramblings.
Plus as you say, it's a good wee crowd that's gathered round it

I think just put out the word that your setting up like clan type things, and everyone can just go and join the group they want to. Then you can get some Imperialist to sit at a map and draw nice lines to hold everyone in to their bit. A bit like they did in Africa and the Middle East, 'cause that worked a treat...

You seem to be under the impression that Britain wants N.ireland. Oh it's sooooo much more complicated than that. But a topic I would struggle to explain on here.
Simply put, the majority of people in NI want to keep the union. If you want to know why, google the "ulster plantation"

It's very much a 'conversation' thread, which is a GOOD thing. We need, as men, to just talk and bare our little souls and hearts sometimes. When i joined this forum I was dealing with some personal stuff that was causing me some grief, and I decided at that time to wear my heart on my sleeve and 'just say stuff', to not pretend, I think that idea has paid dividends. I have long maintained that this site is more than JUST anout shaving, it's like a 'mens' group' for a lot of us, at least it seems that was to me...
