Hello all,
New to straight razor shaving (5 shaves in). Enjoying it so far. Getting a lot of irritation though. I think it's because I am not getting a good lather. I am using a Simpson Beaufort B4 pure badger and a SRD soap. Can't quite seem to get the water ratio right. Using a Dovo 6/8 razor. Any suggestions? I have a omega silver tip brush and TOBS soap on the way.
Also, I have a couple small nicks in my SRD strop. Should I be worried about having damaged my blade?
Thanks and look forward to chatting with all of you about my new favourite way to shave.

Welcome to SRP
Lynn has a video of lathering the SRD soap up on YouTube. Basically soak your brush, shake out most of the water. Load the soap onto the brush, add a little bit of water to the base end of the bristles shake the extra water out. Repeat loading and the addition of water until you have a good brush full of lather. Once you have lathered a few times it will be easier to judge the first round of loading to save a few steps.
Nicks in the strop, the razor will likely need a touch up.
BTW if you add your approximate location to your profile it will be easier to get local help.

Irritation is as much attack angle as anything. Focus on consistently holding the razor st the correct angle. Jaw line chin and neck take awhile to get used to but it falls in place rather quickly.

Hello, and welcome to SRP. 1st question is the razor been honed by a pro. and is shave ready. things to look at right now is angle, pressure, and how many passes are you making, and lather. But the most important thing 1st off is the razor has to be shave ready. If it isn't get it honed and shave ready, before looking into anything else!!
We have no control of what other people do or say to us, but we have control to how we REACT !! GOD BLESS

Hey Mate, welcome to SRP
When I began "this journey" I found that a pre-shave oil helped compensate (a bit) for my lack of technique.
A bottle of baby oil nearby is a good (and cheap !) part of my ritual.
That said, a straight razor honed by a pro is a good investment first and foremost.
Check out your area and find a razor club or a mentor who will help.

Razor is a Dovo 6/8 I got from SRD. I ordered a shaving set from the sight. As for passes just doin one right now with some touch up for chin and neck area. Tried a full second pass once but paid for it with irritation.
Can I tell by visual inspection if the blade is damaged?

Hi and welcome. Look at the edge straight down under bright light. If you can see the actual edge it will need a honing. Pressure and angle are the 2 biggest issues for new Sr shavers. Pressure is just enough to wipe the lather off. For angle start flat against the face and slowly increase till you feel it's right. Good luck
