Tried a new puerh today, one that I've been looking forward to sampling.
2000 Pu'erh, Shu/cooked, from Yunnan. Producer unknown.
Breaks up nicely, some twigs in this tea, but also large, whole leaves.
First steeping:
Color: Light reddish with a brown-orange tint
Odor: Fresh forest with a hint of florals. The murky storage odor it had when it arrived has vanished, it now is both fresh and pleasant.
Taste: Lighter than some of the puerhs I've had lately, but still rich, a round, pleasant tea, I'm thinking forest leather with a floral taste, and a surprising citrus freshness followed by a lingering, clear sweetness. Mouthwatering, little astringency.
Second steeping:
Color: Darker than the first steeping, but not by much.
Odor: I'm getting less of the floral notes. Apart from that pretty straight line from the first steeping.
Taste: A mellow, well balanced tea, more of the deeper tastes. The citrusy freshness has been overrun by a more defined sweetness. Very interesing tea.
Third steeping and beyond:
Did not change much from second, rounded, flavourful and very pleasant drink. It also provided a fine partner to today's very flavour-rich dinner - a turkish sourdough sandwich with a healthy dose of leftover beef brisket BBQ.

Today's tea; a sample of Anxi Tie Guan Yin:
Light roasted green oolong this, looks great from the pack.
I made 7 steepings, 10 sec, 15 sec, 3 minutes, 10 secs, 15 secs, 1 minute, 15 secs
First steeping, 10 secs:
Color: Light yellow with a warm brownish tint
Odor: Slightly hay-like, floral notes. Typical green tea, fresh
Taste: Mild, light acidity and astringency, a nice sweet aftertaste. Mouthwantering.
Second steeping, 15 secs:
Color: Like first, a little darker
Odor: Fresh, hay-like, floral. Slight seaweed.
Taste: Mild, light, like first.
Third steeping, 3 min:
Color: Dark warm yellow with a brownish tone
Odor: Strong, green,
Taste: Full, rich tea. Getting in touch with it's acidity, tannins are present, and the ever so slight smokyness. Some sweetness in the aftertaste
Fourth steeping and beyond:
It continues along the same path, distinct and clear. I made seven steepings, the tea could have taken more. At 7th steeping I could feel it just starting to dip a little.
All I had was what is present in the first picture. I used half of it for this tea, just about 2 teaspoons. This is what it looked like after use:

What we have here is 2013 Miyazaki kamairicha shincha Minekaori.
Kamairicha is a fairly rare, traditionally pan-fired tea, produced only on a small scale by select artisan tea growers in a few locations around Kyushu Island. This particular tea is from the minekaori cultivar (translating to mountain fragrance?), which is specifically developed for the production of kamairicha and, apparently, is only cultivated by a few growers, the majority in Miyazaki Prefecture.
This minekaori kamairi cha comes from Gokase Town.
It's fairly hard to see in this cup (maybe I'll switch back to the white cup for photos) but the colour of the liquor is a kind of pale golden green.
The leaves are in tightish curls, rather than the rolled needles of a steamed sencha, and stay quite compact after the first steep.
The flavour of this first steep is very similar to the Kagoshima sencha Asatsuyu that I had a couple of months ago—light and sweet but also very savoury.
These are second steep photos but, even as we progress further, the leaves expand nicely and, unlike the mellow sweetness of a sencha, this becomes quite delicate in flavour and almost floral.
I wouldn't want to do more than four steeps, to be honest—it starts to lose flavour quite fast but you do get a short but enjoyable run out of it. (As much as I love the Saemidori sencha and it's ability to be just as delicious on its eighth steep as it was on its first, you end up drinking the same tea all afternoon!).
At 8.24USD for 50g, it's not the cheapest tea in the world but it's money well spent.
I just realised that I forgot to get a photo of the order itself, as it arrived—I probably won't bother now; I bought this and a marginally more expensive Kamairicha Okumidori (both 50g).
