I have drank whiskey but what would be a good progression up from a good over all to different branches of whiskey? IE Good light/pale ale starter for beer, move up to amber like malt sweetness or bitter notes that develop flavor? Malt go for more belgium beer styles, maybe an abbey or tripple, porter, or if you like bitter (really who doesn't!) go up the IPA route working you way up the IBU scale.

Is there anything similar to whiskey or what notes to look for when tasting?

    Default Scotch/whiskey of the day

    Thanks all!

Going to give the Templeyon and Knob Creek a try.

I prefer neat, so I'm hoping they stand up well on their own.

Last night was my Balvenie single barrel 15 year. Very smooth with a honey and vanilla finish.

I also recommend the Knob Creek Rye. It is a 51% rye, so it's a great place to start and still smooth if you find you are not a rye fan.

Knob Creek currently has three offerings that I'm aware of:

Their classic bourbon is a nine year and is at least finish-aged in sugar maple barrels. This affords it a lovely sweet finish. A good after-dinner bourbon, always neat as is my preference.

They also offer either a single barrel or special reserve version of the aforementioned. I'm not certain which. It is also a nine year; I haven't tried it and cannot argue for or against. Locally it runs $10.00 more.

The rye comes in the same bottle as the other two, but has a matte black label with green lettering. This is really a reference post, that Knob has three bottles out and I don't want you coming back with bourbon when you went looking for rye. I will always recommend the bourbon though.

I usually make my manhattans with Bulleit and Noilly Prat, but they were out of it last time I was at the store, so now I have a bottle of Wild Turkey 81 which I don't like as much (apparently they used to make 101 proof which was better).
But for sipping rye I'd pick Knob Creek.

Well my wife got me an early Christmas gift last night. I was taken to the liquor store last night and told to get a bottle of whatever I wanted, well within reason of course. I have been interested in Scotch lately and having zero experience with it, I went with the owners suggestion of Dimple 15 year old blended scotch. I have to say that I am really enjoying it. It is nice and smooth and does not have a bite to it. I think I might have to try some other scotches as funds and SWMBO will allow.

Hey guys, I'm wondering if you can help me out. I just finished my Macallan 18 tonight. I love Macallan, but I have really fallen for some of the Laphroaig offerings lately, especially quarter cask and triple wood. I'm debating whether to get another bottle of the Macallan 18 or spend roughly double and get a bottle of Laphroaig 25. I have never tasted the 25 and I was wondering if any of you had and whether you thought is Laphroaig different from their 18? I'd love the Macallan 25 or 30, but neither will be in the cards for quite a while unless I win the lottery lol.

    Thanks for any help.

I recently bought a bottle of Dewar's 12, and have become fond of it. A gentle peat smokiness and light honey sweetness make it definitely more-ish.

I bought a very close friend a few bottles of small batch bourbon for Christmas and he bought me a bottle of Highland Park 30 year! Unfortunately I haven't tried it yet, I am waiting till new years eve to open it. We always open and try a new single malt on new years eve. I had already bought a bottle for the occasion but when I received this I knew It was the one we would have. I will try to let everyone know how it is!!!
