Thanked: 0Scotch/whiskey of the day
I've used the stone in bourbon a friend served me. It worked as advertised and stayed cool for quite a while, but I'm not a fan of chilling my whisky of any type, and I'd never personally do it on purpose, but if you like a cool dram, and don't want it diluted by melting ice, the stones are your ticket.

Scotch/whiskey of the day
Has anyone tried Rye whiskey? If so, what's a good one to start with in the $40-60 range?
Thanks!

So I love whisky but what would be a good work up from whiskey novice to master wiskey drinker, I am a beer master, brew it, love it, drink it all, taste and recommend to otheres. So I know how to taste. Just curious how to work up whiskey or if any recommendations.

There is a small distillery in Iowa called Templeton that makes a fantastic rye and runs about $45.00. Distribution is limited though.
Knob Creek bourbon, of the Small Batch Collection (Knob, Booker's, Baker's and Basil Hayden's), has a rye out now as well. The local liquor store was looking right at $40.00/750mL. We had a sampling with a friend of mine who's employed there. There's a bit of fire behind it and I believe a 120 proof rating, compared with their usual 100 proof. That said, it had steady rye flavor and a relatively smooth finish.Do to budget cuts the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off; we apologize for any inconvenience.

Thanked: 1The Templeton rye is very nice neat, though I have a hard time finding it out in Oregon in our state liquor stores. The Knob creek mentioned above is nice, the Bulleit Rye is not as good (I use in old fashioneds). I havent spotted the better aged Sazerac Rye, but I have heard they are a good baseline to measure against.
Minnebrew: what do you mean by workup? Not sure if you mean selections of particular whiskey, tasting methodology or formal courses. Knowledge of beer tasting probably puts you pretty far down the road regardless since there is so much overlap.
