Thread: Scotch/whiskey of the day

I'm a newbie too Kyle, but dove in head first and I'm loving it. I love strong flavors when it comes to most things though.

I think that's why I am really loving the Islay Whiskeys.

Can't seem to be able to watch the football games today, so I thought I would enjoy the weather with Macallan 12 and a cigar.

I will say that I will be buying a bottle of gentlemen jack, unless I hear something that gets me onto something else from the more experienced here. On my birthday late December, I was offered any drink for free from the owner of the bar. I picked a shot of gentlemen jack. Went down like water. I was seriously surprised at the lack of burn and pure deliciousness. Ended up doing 7 more, blacked out, went to a second bar I don't even remember leaving the first. Yada Yada, had a good time haha. Is there anything close in price to gentlemen jack that has the same level of smoothness??

The only thing I can think of, that I've had, and that you can get down there, is Stranahans Colorado Single Malt. Although a bit more money, and it has a bit more kick than that Gentleman Jack at 47%, it's got some terrific flavours that are outstanding. Really makes your mouth come alive.

I love Stranahan's, but then I've had it at the distillery. It is good stuff!

Bowmore 15 yr old "Darkest" aged in sherry casks 43% ABV miniature.

On the nose: The sherry greets you right away. The peat takes a back back seat to the sherry and oak; it's there, but you have you think about what you're nosing to pick it up. A very nice bouquet of notes. The longer it airs in the glass, vanilla notes become prominent. I'd almost think this was a Speysider. The peat smoke nearly disappears but the oiliness of peat stays.

Black pepper, slightly sweet and slightly fruity on the palate. The peat is on the finish but fades into nuance fairly quickly.

As a host, I would offer this to anyone who enjoys scotch and I think they'd find it very pleasant. Think of blending the best of what is Balvenie Double Wood with Laphroaig Quarter Cask (which to me isn't very peaty), turn up the sherry just a bit more and you have a good description of this dram in my book.

Would I buy a full sized bottle? Yes, yes I would.

I did finish off the evening after the Bowmore with a wee dram of Laphroaig 10.....

ever try Knob Creek? Kyle its been my go to for a few years now,, but if you don't like a burn, stay away from the 120 proof small cask Tc
