Yes, rye is a type of whisky. Rye is a grain, like barley and corn are grains. All are used to make whisky, some are combined. In USA, to be called Rye, the Whisky must be at least 51% Rye distillate. Bourbon must be at least 51% corn. Many Bourbons use a bit of Rye in their Mash Bill. Wheat is another grain used to make whiskey. I have never tried a straight wheat whiskey.
Rye is a bit less sweet than bourbon, and a bit more spicey. I really dig it.
If you want an intro to Rye, Jack Daniels and Jim Beam have started making unaged Rye. I hghly recommend both.
Correction, Jim Beam is not making a Rye, but a young bourbon called Jacob's Ghost.Last edited by souschefdude; 12-11-2013 at 09:03 AM.

Jim Beam stuff is called Jacob's Ghost, and I correct myself, that is the same mashbill as their White label, not a rye.

I haven't seen it in the usual spots but I know a couple of more specialist places that might have it

I am actually putting together a tasting of Rye for a group of friends next month. It includes a tour of a local Distillery that will be producing it's first batch....

I'm a fan of the The Glenlivet line. The older ones are great but my favourite is the 15y French oak reserve.

Thanked: 32I've been thinking about doing some road trips to try some local VA rye. Ever had Copper Fox or Catoctin Creek ryes?
The Mt. Vernon museum put out their white rye that was made according to George Washington's recipe. At $95 for a 375ml bottle, I just couldn't justify the expense for it.

never cared much for the Tennessee Honey....i find whiskey sweet in it's own right...
last night was a Knob Creek 9 year single barrel reserve kind of night....tonight is gonna have to be Booker's single barrel, cask strength, unfiltered and uncut special batch bourbon!
this stuff is 126.8 proof and delicious! let it breathe for about 20 minutes and add about a half teaspoon of Spring water to your glass if you want to open up the flavor....absolutely amazing!
