Glengoyne 15. ....we have a winner
Tried the Glengoyne 15 last night. A delectable dram.
An unpeated Highland whisky all the way with rich notes of a very ripe red delicious apple, caramel, malt, cake batter, vanilla. Uncolored whisky. I want to try more Glengoyne offerings now. I liked this better than the Balvenie Double Wood which is saying a lot.
Other end of the spectrum for me tonight : Laphroaig 10. People either love it or hate it. I think it's great.
Interesting fact I did not know about Laphroaig : they get their barrels from Makers Mark.

TAKETSURU PURE MALT 21
After finally getting my hands on a Nikka Taketsuru pure malt 21 year... JW Blue got kicked to the curb.
This 21 has great balance with a nose rich in ripe fruit and the complex changes in character that appear as the finish approaches and long after. It's a big step up from the 17 year, bigger and bolder with longer finish. It was very hard for wife and I to leave any for another day but with managed barely.
I'll spend the money and get the 21 over the 17 for sure. Now to find another bottle...

Thanked: 36I was lucky enough to sample the 18 yo not too long ago. Absolute magic I didn't make notes, but I remember lots of rich fruit. I guess it's pretty similar to the 15. A good friend was given a bottle by his sister when his son was born. Sadly it's a shade too expensive for me to buy my own, although I'm thinking I might pick up a bottle in the summer when my summer money comes through. Let me know if you find any others to try, I'm quite intrigued by Glengoyne.

Auchentoshan Triple Wood
First time trying.
Auchentoshan Triple Wood
No age statement. Aged in bourbon barrels, then oloroso sherry and finally PX sherry casks.
43% ABV.
Great nose. A swirling alternating blend of bourbon notes with the sherries pleasantly evident as well, all supported by a foundation of oak.
Palate is a bit weak, I'm afraid. Triple distillation is a double edged sword. Nearly devoid of malt on the palate. Oak. Black pepper, a metallic hint with just a hint of sweetness. A drier whisky.
Finish of oak lingered a bit but not much else.
I certainly would not turn this whisky down if offered. Good but not great.

Thanked: 36Just been given a bottle of 16 yo balvenie triple wood. Reviews look good but I haven't opened it yet. It's in the queue. Anyone familiar with it?
