I've been gradually working my way through the many smaller scotch samples I treated myself to. Here's a list of the ones I have tried so far. I thought if anyone wanted more info or my opinions on any of them I'd be happy to provide some more info. Some of them are standards:
The Balvenie Doublewood 12 Yr
Laphroaig 10
Talisker 10
Oban 14
Ardmore Traditional Cask
Old Ballantruan
Tomintoul 12
Auchentoshan 12
Old Pulteney 12
Bowmore Darkest 15
Monkey Shoulder (a Blended Malt)
Johnnie Walker Black (shame on the plastic bottle!)
Just now poured a dram of Caol Ila 12 and have only nosed it so far.
More to try!

That's a nice list to sample! I've had some of those, and a few are in my cabinet now. I'm holding on to my beloved Laphroiag Quarter Cask right now, and enjoying some JW Black to tide me over. I still have yet to try the Talisker or the Caol Ila, though I understand both are part of the JW Black blend, so I'm pretty sure I'll like them.

I tried the JW Black for the first time last night. I brought the mini bottle with me to a dinner party. I'll have to try it again in my usual at home environment. To much other stuff going on to get a good read. I thought for plastic bottle mini scotch offerings that Dewar's White Label was better from what I recall. It deserves another chance from me.
Caol Ila was very nice. A lighter peated Islay by a good amount compared to Laphroaig or Ardbeg 10. I'm surprised the Caol Ila is apparently colored as it's quite pale. I thought it was what I would refer to as a "bright" whisky (fruity). A smokey Riesling wine with a hint of the bourbon casks and the maritime. This would be great paired with seafood, shrimp, etc.
Talisker is a heavier whisky. It puts hair on your chest in a good way. Very peppery (ie black pepper) and a hefty dose of smoke balanced with a tad of sweetness. A good whisky to have at a bar with meats or BBQ.
How was the Four Roses?

Thanked: 3795I've tried to better appreciate single malt scotches but after a few bottles of Lagavulin, all the others make me think, this is nice, but I'd rather have Lagavulin.
I just wish I could afford to buy it more often!
Maybe I should spring to a bottle of it to take down to the Texas meet-up!

The Four Roses I have is the single barrel at 50%. I enjoy it. I think most of the Bourbons I have tried are pretty good and the Four Roses is near the top of the list. I normally drink whiskey neat but want to try this with some distilled water sometime.
I poured a glass a while ago. There is a strong oaky-spiciness there, but not overpowering. Maybe some brown sugar. I remember tasting vanilla in this as the drink sits.Last edited by Leatherstockiings; 02-07-2016 at 05:45 AM. Reason: Spellin

I'm teasing myself. I am a Lagavulin virgin but I have an unopened 20 cl bottle of the 16 in my cabinet. I've been wanting to round Islay well before trying it so to date, Lagavulin and Bruichladdich are the only two distilleries from Islay out of the seven that I have not tried offerings from. I will be taking my maiden voyage soon, I'm sure.
