Thread: Scotch/whiskey of the day

Continuing my first venture into Japanese whiskys. Working my way through Nikka whiskys. The 17 and 21 year are to kill for. har! The coffey malt came today. This is my first venture into coffey distilled whiskys. A refreshing new taste for me. It seems bigger and more complex than their mainline single malt. More like their 17 year single malt but less expensive. The Nikka signature taste is big in all of them so far. Love it when distillers and wine makers have great signature taste. Of their coffeys I'm liking the grain over the malt.

Their 'From the Barrel' is next.

I use some coffee beans to help clear the nose and palate between comparison tastings. I'm finding this glass shape does improve the consistent tasting experience. I need to get a couple more whisky glasses.

Oh, enjoy it. IMHO Japanese whiskys have the best after taste. While traveling around Japan I visit different whisky bars. Yamazaki 12 is my favorite. Nikka Pure malt 17 was a very close second for me. Brought both bottles for less than 100usd each from a small family shop in Kyoto. I want to go back...

What's the taketsuru like? I was considering a bottle at one point, though it may have been a different expression but the cost of Japanese whiskies in the UK puts me off, at the moment.

I enjoy them but I find you pay a lot for what can be something quite average when compared with a scotch whisky of the same price point.

Plus, I bought a bottle of hakushu distillers reserve (I think) in Japan, a couple of years ago, which I really liked. I picked up another bottle on offer about 18 months later, which I'm 3/4 of the way through, and it's not nearly as good.

Sorry, I'm not the greatest writer. These websites has been consistent with tasting notes similar to mine. K&L Wines's newsletters have sparked several adventures. Nikka one of them.

Cheering on my Patriots with some Highland Park 18...

Out of the few Whiskeys I've tried so far, this is the only one I could sniff all night, and be quite happy doing so..... But I would have to take a sip eventually, and then I'd be even more happy that I finally did.
