What's the taketsuru like? I was considering a bottle at one point, though it may have been a different expression but the cost of Japanese whiskies in the UK puts me off, at the moment.
I enjoy them but I find you pay a lot for what can be something quite average when compared with a scotch whisky of the same price point.
Plus, I bought a bottle of hakushu distillers reserve (I think) in Japan, a couple of years ago, which I really liked. I picked up another bottle on offer about 18 months later, which I'm 3/4 of the way through, and it's not nearly as good.

Sorry, I'm not the greatest writer. These websites has been consistent with tasting notes similar to mine. K&L Wines's newsletters have sparked several adventures. Nikka one of them.

Thanked: 2284Out of the few Whiskeys I've tried so far, this is the only one I could sniff all night, and be quite happy doing so..... But I would have to take a sip eventually, and then I'd be even more happy that I finally did.

Got down to this natty little bar in Brisbane over the weekend. It's called Cobbler and what you're looking at is a selection of over 300 whiskies from Scotland, Ireland, Japan and Australia.
Here's what I tried:
Lagavulin 8 Year Old
- Young, sweet barley married to a huge wave of peat smoke and iodine. Delicious.
Laphroaig 15 year old
- Beautiful creaky-old oak and vanilla spice with wood smoke and sea spray.
Connemara (peated Irish whiskey)
- First time I've tried this: beautifully balanced, just the right amount of subtle peat smoke - very 'Scotchy' for an Irish. Going to look out for this one from now on, for sure.
Finished the night with an Ardbeg Rob Roy which was made with just the right amount of sweetness.
