I didnt know what beans to buy. The wife and i were at a health food store, why? I guess just too look at all the thin people and to get some good fruit and veg. Found a row of bean dispencers and just picked a med roast and a med/dark roast. No idea of the names.
Guess we will see. Dont think i will be mail ordering beans but here in colorado spings there are a lot of places that roast. I got to try and keep the cost down a little as the wife is still not real happy with this idea. Hoping when she finds it is so much better she will come around.
She also says i need to find a lower/cheaper class of people to hang with. Ha.Last edited by Gasman; 05-13-2018 at 11:01 PM.

As been said, everyone like coffee differently but...
Id love to hear about how much (beans) and water temp i should STARTwith when i make my first pot. My French Press is 34oz in size and mainly med. Roast beans.
Now i know i will get a few different opinions, but thats what im exspecting. Just a starting point. Going by weight on beans before or after grinding, or maybe you measure with a table spoon?
Thanks all. Hope to be enjoying a good cup of joe soon. It's just Sharpening, right?

7.5 grams of coffee per 6 0z cup is the SCAA standard and the water should be between 195-205F. You have to play with the grind depending on the individual coffee.

I have a tea pot that I boil my water in Jerry, not that you need one, but when it starts whistling I take it off the stove and by the time I get it over to my Aeropress, its around 200 degrees. and I have as yet to get into the more exotic beans, they would ruin me cause I,m on the road so much. but my Aeropress travels well and I am a big fan of Community coffee, dark roast. and the aeropress I like much more than the French press, they are the same thing its just very efficient, but it only makes a cup at a time, but its always fresh! besides only the cool people use them Jer Tc

I would mention that the darker the roast the cooler ( by a couple degrees ) water needed to make a consistent good brew. If the resulting brew is sour, the water is too cool for the roast; if bitter, the water is too hot.
These are rough guidelines as the grind of the roast which affects how fast the flavor molecules are released, is also a factor. I have read that French press likes alarger curly grind.

I was going to use a tea pot too TC. The wife keeps one on the stove at all times. Why, i have no clue. I think she was brought up that way. Ive never seen her use it.
I will check temp when it whistles but being at this altitude it happens a little sooner than other places. So i will test and keep testing and timming after the whistle blows to see how long it takes to get to 200 or 205.
I will ha e to play abit to find the amount of beans it takes to make the right amount of grinds. It might take me a bit to get my first cup, but from there it should be better. Tomorrow will be my Sunday so i got the time.
I did look at the Areopress but it didnt make enough coffee for me. My cups are 20oz and i like to have two cups back to back before i run out the door. It's just Sharpening, right?

Just tested the teapot. Damn! that thing gets hot. I think it's for looks more than use. Oh well, It is metal, so it will survive for a while. Seemed to me it took about 1 minute after the whistle blew. Guess I'm ready for it in the morning.

It was a.strong coffee flavor but not bitter. Tried it black and gave the wife a cup. She saturated hers with creamer and sugar. Im trying to not do this. Think maybe a splash of half and half might make it a little better. Its going to take a little practice but i can tell its a better coffee already.
Had to go shopping with the wife so i didnt get to try but one cup. BTW, i found it a little harder on my empty belly.Last edited by Gasman; 05-18-2018 at 05:39 PM.
