Thanked: 3795Even with a very coarse grind in a burr grinder, I end up with more residue in the bottom of my cup than I would like. I got some filters today and will try them in the morning.

Well glad to hear you're liking the French press Jerry.
Sometimes the darker roasts are a bit stronger.
I don't know how long you steeped the coffee, but maybe cut the time down a little bit. Also try cutting back the amount of coffee you use in the press. Both of these make a difference in flavor as well as the coarseness of the grind.
It's a trial and error thing for a bit to get it right.
Your best bet is to stick with one type of coffee until you get that figured out. That way you know what you need to do in both the grind and steep time

Thanked: 3795Well I tried the filter in the french press and I regret to say that there was a noticeable improvement in taste and no residue in the cup. I've got 99 more filters to try before I make a final decision though.

I think after 99 more trys you might be able to come to a conclusion. Ha. Just dont do it in one day. I read that using the filters takes the oils out of the coffee. This might be some of the reason for a more enjoyable cup? Just guessing as i dont KNOW anything about!
I steeped mine for 4 minutes as sugested and used the standard amount i could find on the web and from the support given to me of 50g. for my 32 onces of water at 200 degrees. About a half cup of beans. I will give this a few more trys before changing coffee types. I have to go take a nap to get the body back on the night shift hours soon, but when i get up i will give it another try.It's just Sharpening, right?

As an answer, i am using Papua New Guinea beans as a light city roast for my Latte this AM. I change beans about once a week.

The more you take out the less flavor you have left. Some demand every last subtle flavor and you won't get that with paper filters not to mention the paper itself imparts a taste to varying degrees. On the other hand some want no sediment and want a very tame cup so paper filter is the way to go. If you do use paper make sure to rinse with water before using.

Update: I was running late yesterday so I ran out of the house with NO coffee. That sucked. But I just made another pot the same way as I did the first time and added a splash of half & Half. Took the edge off but still a good flavor. I'd say I just took one step up the ladder on finding a good cup of coffee. I figure I'm trying to get better coffee and no sugar, but a little cream should be ok. Black right now, in this way of brewing was just too much for me. Call me wimpy if you want. I can take it.
It's just Sharpening, right?
