    Christopher,

The surface of the MWF pucks is very hard, and most first time users do not load up the brush sufficiently.

As Victor has said, if you mill the soap, the brush loading is easier.

There are some videos on YouTube covering MWF lathering, such as this one by Mantic59:

YouTube - How To Lather Mitchell's Wool Fat Shave Soap

    Have fun !

    Best regards

    Russ

the mantic video had me asking some questions.. does that upside down soap trick really do anything?

and yes jimmy.. definitely grate your mitchell's if you can.. it completely changes the soaps behaviour for the better...

also.. williams acts a bit nicer too when grated.

Your welcome, Jimmy. That trick actually works for any soap, but it really does seem to bring out the best in MWF, at least if you bowl lather.

I add just a tiny little bit of a shaving cream.

Mitchell’s Wool Fat is one of my best shaving soaps.
It produces excellent leather in the mug, and the leather lasts for long.

I buy only the refill soap and I put it permanently inside a large metallic shaving bowl.
When I want to use it, I put the bowl with the soap into hot water for 2-3minutes. Then, I take it out, throw away the excess water and I start working with a bristle brush.
In 2 minutes I have excellent leather.

The keys for success with this soap IMO are the following:
    - Must be placed permanently in the bowl that the brush will work. Do not work the brush in an empty scuttle
    - Must be softened in hot water for a couple of minutes before using
    - Must be worked with bristle brush and not with badger brush

Interesting........I had a friend send me a sample.I took a 1/4 marble sized piece and put it in my SRD bulldog mug with a little cold water and got a fine lather from it.Shaved like a peach and left my skin feeling like a daisy.I'm sold !! Ahhhhhhhh !!

You guys have convinced me to purchase Tabac, Pre de Provence, Taylors, L'Occitane, Mama Bears, Gentleman's Quarters and probably a few other soaps I am not recalling. Why oh why did I wait so long to try MWF?

This morning was my first time using it. Great shave. Good stuff. Took a little work, but well worth it.

A few months ago I bought Classic Shaving's brand of wool fat soap. Sorry I didn't first read the reviews here. Uggh. No amount of effort produced a passible lather that didn't wither away to a transparent film.

No future purchases without vetting them here!!

mwf if a great soap.. with all the praise it's receiving.. i think it only fair that i chime in on a negative note..

the scent just isnt there.. so many reviews say it's based on patchouli.. however.. i smell nothing..

otherwise.. i wonderful soap and a puck will last forever.
