I never add it before lathering, never works for me, I face lather until I have a shave ready lather then add it, my face disappears under marshmallow like creaminess! same with bowl lathering, I always add it in after. I get it so I can slap my face with my brush, thats how thick I aim for... its nothin kinky... honest
I mix glycerin and lanolin in a small bottle. I add a couple drops to my scuttle when making lather. I find pretty much everything benefits from a 2-3 drops of this mixture.

I load my brush with soap or cream, put 3 - 4 drops of glycerin on the brush & then build lather right on my face. That or on weekends I make uber lather. It's great!
Maybe I should drink some too! Seems like it would make intentines slippery - good for cholestrol?

Thanked: 220Good thread! As it happens, I just bought a bottle of glycerin, but haven't tried it yet. Now I know how to use it! The bottle had a big neck on it though, so I picked up a small medicine dropper to aid in adding it to the cream.

Adding glycerin to soaps or creams is not predictable. Works with some but not with others. Be generous with a palm full, about a quarter size, directly to the face followed by your favorite soap or cream and it will work nicely.

Thanked: 13234Personally I have never added Glycerin to any Soap or Cream I only use it to make Überlather and then only 5 drops, but I have never found it necessary, it is just fun...
There is no doubt in my mind or to my face that some of the Überlather recipes smoke any single Cream or Soap for shaving and others are a dismal failure
Just like everything else in this hobby, you can take it as far as you want... But I see no problem with shaving with a Boar brush and Williams soap forever and a day, I just don't choose to ...

Exactly...These posts about Glycerin have come up many times over the years, just like Glen said, It's not necessary, It's just fun, and that's a big part of this hobby.
If you want to experiment, Go for it. You should always have a bottle of Glycerin and a pump bottle of Kiss my face shave cream to help those less than adequate soaps. Too much rich creamy lather is never a bad thing. It's also a big help if you have very hard water.
A few of my personal favorites, and again, I don't need to do it, It's just fun....MWF + Musgo Real + 5 drops of Glycerin = Lanolin overload (Thanks Glen)
Recently, I did EJ Sandalwood shave cream, SRD Sandalwood + 5 drops of Glycerin...I could hardly contain the lather. It seemed to have a life of it's own.
Tabac Shave Cream in the tube + Tabac Soap + 5 drops of Glycerin.

It's been a while since I started this thread and my results have not changed at all! I continue to add it to my lather every single day. The posts seem to have mixed feelings, or some totally indifferent. I have pretty sensitive skin and I think that the difference it makes is exactly what glycerin is originally made for, which is a skin protectant. IMO the thickness the glycerin adds multiplys the protection of the lather, and give me personally less razor burn.

Thanked: 270I not only like glycerin in shaving soap, I melt down soap slivers and add glycerin to use for bathing. (How to Make New Bar Soap with Old Bar Soap | eHow.com) My skin gets real dry in the winter and the glycerin helps.

Tried it several times with new style Williams soap and it makes a big difference, I think.
Worth playing with from time to time.
