    Default What Cologne

    Gentlemen,

I know exactly, as do many of you, what Tsmba means by folks swimming in their cologne.

I remember enjoying a bowl of chili in a Chicago greaser when a guy in fancy duds slid on the stool next to me, sporting an aftershave that stank like cheap scotch spiked with sweet vanilla. Well, that took care of my hearty chili.

Since then I have tried to beware of some designer house marketing that ghastly aftershave under the name Chili Killer.

The world is a garden of delightful aftershaves, but there's something to be said about subtlety.

    Regards,

    Obie

Perhaps this is why I like the English houses so well. I've heard their approach described as "understated". Just reading comments on cologne sections of shaving forums (not to mention BN), longevity and "sillage" are major issues. I've never been able to properly judge either one and have learned (sometimes the hard way) that if I can smell my cologne several hours after application, I've overdone it. Honest feedback is important.
As to "that guy"....to this day I cannot stand Polo. I have a family member who loves the stuff and I've always wondered if he's aware how repulsive it is?

I know this is a difficult question....but what is the "Fuel for Life" like? I have Donna Karan's "Fuel" and really like it. It doesn't smell like fuel, and is described as "boozy".

    Default What Cologne . . .

    Gentlemen,

I don't distinguish between cologne and aftershave. With that in min, here is my two cent's worth:

    Spanish Leather by Trumper
Spanish Leather by Truefitt & Hill
    Woods of Windsor
    Tabac
    No. 6 by Caswell-Massey
    Proraso
    Pashana
No 74 Victoria Lime by Taylor of Old Bond Street
    Puig Vetiver
    Spanish Floid
    Agua Lavanda, Puig
    Pinaud Clubman
    English Leather

To me, they're not related. I buy aftershave strictly for therapeutic benefits (antiseptic, astringent, moisturizing, cooling, etc), not as dilute fragrance. As long as a given product provides utility, I could care less about its fragrance as long as its not unpleasant.
After my shave, I use an alum block, which I rinse away after cleanup, THEN I apply aftershave, THEN I apply whatever cologne or EdT strikes my fancy that day.
I've seen these types of questions time and again, usually followed by a listing of fragrance concentrations in each type of liquid (EdP, EdT, EdC, a/s). I think there is a school of shavers who look to an aftershave for their scent. I'd almost bet that perfume houses LOVE this consumer!

Guerlain Vetiver. Bought for me by my wife, she likes it, I like it, sorted. Tend to only use it at weekends or holidays.
