Great thread. Just got through going thru the whole thing. I bought a Shumate Peacemaker last year that had a shoulder less blade. It needed a good polishing but I managed to just give it a good cleaning and honed her up. Got a great shave and I just got through a month and a half of shaves and it sure held an edge for a long time. I haven't got around to polishing it up yet, , too busy enjoying the shaves. I just purchased a Shumate 135 today and it should be in the mail soon.

I'm curious about something. Being a newbie, I don't have that much experience with straights. I've read in this thread that Shumates can hold an edge for a long time as compared to other straights. What is the average length of time for a razor to hold and edge if just maintained by stropping? I've been shaving with my Shumate for a little over a month now with no other razor to rotate with and just stropping with linen and leather.

Well, I had been on a trip recently and had only brought my one Shumate Peacemaker and a strop. A month and a half later and still going strong. I left that razor at my in-laws and I will probably bring my hone to touch it up whenever I get back there again.

On another note, I liked how that razor shaved so much that I have been on a Shumate razor buying spree. I recently purchased a Shumate 135, a Shumate Vulcan, and a Shumate Trusty. I gotta stop this buying jag! Also got a "The Mab" which just happens to have a French Point and is shoulder less. I just love the shoulder less look.

I've got four now, three of them currently on the way, so I will have to pause for a bit unless of course I see something exceptional.

That just depends on how often you shave, the type of steel it is made from & so on. Some may take longer than others, like stainless as opposed to carbon steel, before they need honing. Your technique also plays a part in it, YMMV.

I have one (Shumate) but it isn't the best of shape. I had a nicer one but when I got it, it had a cracked blade. I grew up in the Houston area & found one that says Houston, TX on it but I'm sure it was made somewhere's else.

Found this little jewel out running in the wild. Picked it up for next to nothing.
