Thread: Torrey Team!

I had one JR Torrey and regret selling it.

Just found one that looks just like that one. (Except dirty and in need of some love)

Do clubs ever die? Or do people just not like Torrey razors anymore?

Just received my very first, but not my last, Torrey in the mail today. Nice 5/8" "Our 136." Honed it up on a BBW/Coticule progression, and it's as nice a shaver as I've ever used, and quite sleek and modern looking for being a century+ old design. I may just spend some time polishing this one up.

It came in an excellent condition, very uncommon, Torrey coffin cushioned strop box and razor holder. C-MON box shown in comparison to demonstrate the comically large size (or miniature strop size) of the razor box. The strop box was patented in 1882, patent expired in 1899. I doubt either the box or the razor is that old, and if they are, they've been extraordinarily well preserved. I vaguely recall seeing another box like this years ago, but for the life of me, I can't remember if I saw it in an antique store or online in one of the forums.

Edit: I noticed that the razor did not extend as deep into the strop as the length of the strop box. Looking down into it with a flashlight revealed an object wrapped in brown paper. Could this be strop dressing? With some difficulty, I managed to extract the paper wrapped object. Wrapped in layers of brown butcher's paper I extracted... a piece of wood. Dejected, I wrapped it back up and stuffed it back where it came from. Perhaps someday I'll pull it back out and write a note on it for some future owner to discover, when I am long dead.

First shave with it, and first shave with an American made straight razor, for that matter. Liked it enough to immediately go buy this...

Twas the first straight razor I ever shaved with. Got plenty of them, now.

Yeah, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a Torrey as a first time straight razor, provided it's in good shape. Too bad the company couldn't limp along for a few extra decades, it might actually be doing okay today, what with the renewed interest in straight razor shaving.
