    I really like DOVO's.

I think they are massively underrated, I suspect because they are pretty common and most people tend to prefer either vintage razors or the more expensive production razors.

My first razor was a DOVO Black Star and it was joined by a Bismarck shortly after that. Both are excellent shavers and well made, and I'd highly recommend either of those blades to anyone looking for a good blade that doesnt cost the earth.

    Question

Stubear..2 questions.......First,am I right in guessing that the special is their premeire standard everyday blade and that the best quality is the budget model and all the others are more dolled up razors ? Second...do they make a bismark in 5/8 that you know of ?? Yes..Dovos are awesome blades !!

I'm not sure how DOVO market the blades in terms of basic and upper range, but theres no difference in the shave between the Best Quality and the Bergischer Lowe. All the extra money for the BL goes on gold wash, fancy scales and spine work.

I think they make a squarepoint Bismarck today in 5/8, and I have seen a couple of Bismarck razors (from before DOVO bought the brand name) in 5/8 on eBay.

Yep, they do, here it is. I've not shaved with this one myself, but going on what all the other DOVO's are like I'd put money on it being a good blade!

My very first straight razor was a 5/8 Dovo Best Quality. I learned alot on that little razor and wish I had not sold it, for I'd be interested to see what kind of an edge it would now take as I have advanced manyfold since beginning to hone.

Its quality was fine and a great little shaver. I have briefly owned a faux tortoiseshell version, in addition to a 6/8 Bismark, which I understand was a company that Dovo took over.

I'm disappointed that Dovo no longer produce 7/8 and 8/8 blades as they once did. There would certainly be a market for them if they were to recommence their production and it is unclear to me as to their reasoning behind not doing so. Perhaps they no longer have the correct grinding wheels and blank producing equipment and do not wish to fork out for them?

I'm also disappointed as to the fact that Dovo no longer stamp their name on the tang, but use lazer etching in lieu.

Bottom line is I would rather have a New old stock razor for the sort of prices they charge, however were I a newb and unable to hone; I think many vendors here, SRD in particular offer a great service and provision of a shave ready Dovo with lifetime maintenance.

I have drooled over many brands of razor on this forum, and hope to own many of them someday. Two of the prettiest, IMO, are the Bismarck, and the Bergischer Lowe.

I know most will think I am crazy for admitting this...But I had a Sub Zero NOS that I traded to a buddy for the Red Bismark and an Engals (Two of my Fav Razors)....I don't have the same love for filli's that everyone else has. And Dovo and Engals fit my face better...And that my friend is why you can never ask who makes the best razor!

That friend thanks me every Monday...little does he know, I'm the one who got the beter deal in my eyes...

I was wondering why Dovo doesn't have the fan base a lot of the others do and I see my question has been answered. A lot fo the people who shave with a str8 like vintage razors and dovos are not vintage. Personally I could care less if its vintage or not.

My only problem is that I seem to forget about my str8s a few years ago and they rusted so I have to repalce them with a stainless stell which was able to save me from myself. Dovo offered the right product at a good price, not a great price but a good price.
