Can you please translate this for meAttachment 229768
Hi Slamthunderide, I can read the group of kanji near the handle. Made by Inoue Tosuke. Can't read the other part. Maybe a closer pic would help.
Firstly, thanks to @Arsenico for translating everyone's kanji. It's his fantastic work that led me to find this forum.
Secondly, can you have a look at the kanji on the following two kamisori please? I recognise the tamahagane kanji on both razors and from what I've read on this thread, the four kanji closely grouped in a square might mean "trademark". Other than that, I'm clueless and would love to know more about them.
The photo's were taken by the seller so if they're not clear enough, I'll take some better ones when the razors arrive.
Thanks.

After looking around, could the one on the left be a Yahatamaru? The blade shape looks quite similar to other Yahatamaru kamisori and the very last kanji at the very bottom (part of the maker's name?) looks identical to that on a Yahatamara.
Of course, I could be completely wrong!
ScratchUK, Sharptonn, thank you for your kind words.
I can read Yamato Shin on the kami on the right, last 3 kanji. Then, yes the 4 kanji meaning trade mark and above them should be the "high grade" ones. And of course tamahagane. I have already seen a kami like that... I am almost sure I sold one a couple of years ago :)
The one on the right is a bit more hard to read... more detailed pic?
丸 this is the kanji for maru...might be .. ;)
Brilliant, thanks. I'll take a better picture of the one on the left when they arrive.
So, to make sure I've got this right: the kami on the right was made from tamahagane by a maker called Yamato Shin (or at least in his workshop).
Which kanji refer to the quality and what do they say? Is it good quality or bad? Are they the kanji directly above the trademark or the ones higher up, on the black metal?
Apologies for all the questions but these are my first kamis and I really want to find out as much as I can.
Thanks again for your help, it's much appreciated.
Yes it is a tamahagane kamisori made by Yamato Shin, who I believe it's a person.
I was talking about the kanji above the tamahagane kanji. I have seen those kanji on other razors.
Tokubetsu Ukeau 『特別請合』...special guarantee or something like that...sorry but i am trying to explain something from a foreign language to another foreign language...:D
Actually the two kanji above the trade mark ones also refears to a "special made" razor and should be 『特製』but I have some doubts on the second one...
My guess is around 1950 or something. But it's just a guess.
Trying to find some more info on this one, i ended up on a famous ebay japanese seller who has a kamisori of the same maker. He calls it yamato gokoro and not shin.
(Type on ebay yamatogokoro, one word)
This is because the 3rd kanji 心 can be also read as kokoro/gokoro.
Anyway Yamato Shin is a surname/name combination in japanese.
Give a look here
They arrived today and I'm blown away. They really are beautiful things.
I managed to take a few pictures before the daylight faded and I think this one shows the last kanji on the kami on the left quite well - "maru"?

I'm thinking about buying this sharpening stone and was wondering what it sad and if you know anything about it. Your help would be much appreciated and thank you for your time.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...1f31b267f0.jpg
Hi aaron1234 , the kanji on your stone are handwriting (i mean it is a stamp, but in a handwriting style) ones, so a little bit hard to read.
4th to 6th kanji are 本山合砥 Honyama Awasedo... so "natural finishing stone".
The second one should be 良、which means "good". The problem is the first kanji... could be many things to me...
扣 but the square seems to big - means among other things "spare, back up"
but the upper right part of the kanji could have faded, so...
拈 ”twist, spin"
拾 "to pick up, to gather"
拓 "clear, open"
and some others..probably combined with 良
I am almost sure these first 2 kanji are not describing the mine or the place this stone come from...
Any japanese friend here?:hmmm:
Attachment 233750I too am hoping for info on this stone. Here is a better picture. Thank you in advance!!
Hey I think I got it! :)
Attachment 233806
It should be this
精良本山合砥
Seiryou Honzan Awasedo
Seiryou means extremely good!
Look at the pic! It's the same group of kanji. So the first one is incomplete on that stone.
Hi Arsenico
I have a hone I bought quite some time ago & I got it cheap. I got it out not long ago & was looking at it. While I was looking at it, I flipped it over 7 found some writing on the bottom of the base I did not see before. I want to know if you can translate it.

That looks like a nice razor.
Thank you. I'm just hoping to figure out what it is[emoji1]
Hi Steve...
都窪郡妹尾町箕島 On your stone there is an address. Tsukubo Senoo...should be in Okayama Prefecture, South of Japan.
箕島 these 2 last kanji means Mishima or Minoshima...a name or a place... But I haven't found any place called Mishima in Okayama prefecture, but i might be wrong.
Last letters are Katakana ハマダ Hamada and サー that means "sir", so COULD be sir Hamada, but the order is different...
Numbers on top should be the date...Showa 43 (1968), April 26th..
I need some more time for the kamisori...gonna show the picture to some of my friends :)
I was asked by a friend to find out more about that Kamisori , any help is greatly appreciated .
Just won this on the bay. What does the model number mean?

Hello Wirm, I apologize for my delay.
This one looks to me like those sheffield razors, with chinese kanji.
I have seen a couple of these razors here on stp, and I am sure there are people who can help better than me.
Anyway, last 2 kanji should be 好調, kōchō, meaning good conditions, but usually used for people and not for things.
絶 This MIGHT be the first one, making the reading "zekkōchō", meaning "in perfect shape".
Hope this helps! :)
Can i get some information on:
Hi bsohm, this is a Inoue Tosuke, kinmoji. It might be one of those not made by himself as I can't see the 作 (saku) kanji after his name 井上藤助. Mine is just a guess though. I mean, maybe the one with that kanji are made by himself, while those missing it, MIGHT be not. Anyway I have exactly the same one and it's one of my sweetest Kami! I just love the size, the shape, the way it hones. You are gonna love it!
Thank you very much now to wrap it.....i have been working on honing it also it has a small chip in the blade as well.
What does this say, please?

Hi ArsenicoAttachment 240123Attachment 240124
I was hoping that you could help with this Kamisori I have in my collection, iv had it some time but haven't got round to honing it yet. I plan on doing this tomorrow. Whilst I was inspecting the blade it there seems to be many symbols on it, certainly more than any of my other kamisori. Can you shed some light on what they mean? Iv attached 3 pictures in different lights, so hopefully it should make any translation easier?
Many Thanks in advance
Hi, Arsenico.
Recently I bought a western-style razor, but the thing is going to met Lynn to get a shake before pointing southwards.
I just have pictures from the auction site. Could be waiting until get it on my hands to take better pictures but, you know, anxiety rules.
Can you, please, help me to figure what was written in its scales from a previous owner? Looks a person's name and date.
Thank you in advance!
