Thanked: 580Bit of a marathon read, but interesting. If you are a senior member, say it how it is. If you are a mentor you should point out problems and faults, and publicly so all can learn. If the maker can't take constructive criticism, then too bad.
I do admire anyone with the skill to even attempt making a razor, but it has to be functional and do what it was designed to do. I would imagine someone starting out who spent $350 on a custom Damascus with a point at the heel that doesn't make the hair on your face just fall off, but puts a nice cut on your cheek losing interest rather swiftly.Into this house we're born, into this world we're thrown ~ Jim Morrison

OK, I was flip before I read all of this thread, BUT...
I am a relative (2 years) newbie, and I happen to have bought one modern "custom", but got it for a very good price (wonder why?). I, like many newcomers say to themselves, (erroneously), "if I only got the perfect razor for me, all my shaving problems would be solved". The temptation, after the Austs, Dovos and Bokers is to look for "the perfect" custom that they can afford (or not).
Anyway, I got one, and wasn't crazy about it at first (felt harsh), but after some stropping it was pretty good, but not as good as a few I've subsequently gotten from a few people on this thread that were vintage, and tuned up. It is now in the hands of one of you to try to correct what should have been to me and the maker and vendor a flaw.
So, I guess in the grand scheme, that's what PMs ought to be about. Not to "poop in somebody's punch bowl" in a thread where they're bragging and feeling good, but to say privately "hey, you may want to look at that spine, or edge, or scales".
The reason I say that something should be said is the temptation I mentioned earlier, that with so many "custom" makers around and advertising officially or not here on SRP (or having proud owners/members unwittingly do it for them), the great temptation for newcomers (and not so new) is "that must be better for me.", not matter the expense.
Excuse all the quotes and parentheses, just trying to make jumbled thoughts make sense. Mentors and moderators here do a great job, but a little personal outreach in a PM to say, "Have you looked at that ____?" would help a lot of folks like me.Just call me Harold
