If they didn't ask for criticism, then I wouldn't give any.

With that being said, I think a true craftsman or artisan will accept constructive criticism, ignore some of it, and heed some of it.
I don't like getting criticism that says you screwed that up, but I gladly accept criticism that says you screwed that up because of the following...

I think it would be better to contact the individual owner directly/personally to offer better/true evaluation.

Pointing out flaws certainly will not make you any friends, but everything should be able to stand up to scrutiny being an idea , person, or product. I grew up hearing the same thing most have said on here about not saying anything at all if you can't say something nice. This is just my opinion now being politically correct, and soft spoken in order not to offend someone is not making the world a better place.

If a person asks for an opinion on something, by all means give them one. A person doesn't have to be nasty about something if they don't like. With everything being typed on forums, sometimes it takes creative writing to convey a thought. If you do not have this ability to do so, sometimes it is best to not say something and move along to another post. Constructive criticism is a hard pill to swallow sometimes, so be careful what you ask for. Another thing is you want to point out problems or flaws and don't want to seem mean natured about it....SO ask questions to the OP and see what they say. Sometimes they will point out any flaws or problems they may have with said product and sometimes answer their questions too. I've seen some people take this approach.

I try not to say anything disparaging about anything.

This is sometimes difficult when I see praise for the use of ivory, which I find abhorrent.
