Question Etiiquitte - To speak or not to speak

    That is the question ???

So you see a post that a proud new owner of a new custom razor puts up..
Considering yourself pretty well versed in what should be and what shouldn't be on a SR.

Do you or don't you point out that the huge uneven bevel really should not be there on a Brand New Custom razor, in fact shouldn't really be there on a 200 year old Sheffield either..
The the tiny little pointy neck at the pivot end probably will not hold up well when wrapped around that huge 9/8 razor.. Maybe that fancy sharp point in the Thumbnotch might hamper proper stropping regardless of how cool it looks...
That the tiny pointy tail might not make control when shaving very easy...

So do you say something or do you just follow the herd and say "Nice Looking Razor"

    What do you think??

If he's not asking questions about it, I would say nothing at all.

If they ask for opinions, I will offer mine. Otherwise, unless there is a blatant mistake, I move on.
It is difficult to see newer guys clamoring over something I would not even try, however.
Someone usually come along and points out the faults, but I leave that to the experienced makers.

What do I know? I don't make razors!

    I rest my case.

    +1 to Sharptonn

I know what works for me but that might not be what works for others.

Keeping your ideas to yourself seems the prudent path unless the poster clearly asks for opinions.

My momma told me if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Well I have only one custom razor. I paid a crazy amount of money for it. Two of the people who have responded in this thread so far felt comfortable enough to have said something to me about the flaws, in a quiet aside. I appreciate the input. I also appreciated that is was a quiet little aside. So I try to pass on the same kind of treatment. If it is someone I feel comfortable communicating with, then a quiet carefully worded PM. Otherwise like my grandmother used to always tell me, I just keep my big trap to myself. I do not offer likes unless they are true and most often don't comment, but if I do offer a word or two they are honest.

I agree, though of course I failed to adhere to that reasonable path myself recently when someone bought a custom for her boyfriend/husband. I remember that something seemed wrong with the spine and/or monkey tail and I asked if anyone else saw anything wrong with it. It was only later that I realized that my comment might have been insensitive.

I have mixed feeling about this though. Being polite is important. Then again, giving an honest assessment MIGHT be helpful, though as has been pointed out, perhaps it only should be offered when it specifically is solicited.

Tact still is something that eludes me way too much of the time, but I'm working on it.

Personally I'd prefer if someone told me this. I bought a custom once I thought was awesome. A 9/8.. in fact and it had a hugely uneven massive bevel. I sold it at a huge loss and don't buy customs from guys just starting up anymore.

I'd just ask something like how is stropping and shaving with it. If he's happy with it I'd say nothing more other then enjoy but if he said well to be honest it's not that great then I would tell him why I thought that was. Who am I anyways it doesn't matter.
