I am sure that "silver steel" the alloy doesn't NEED to contain silver, the industry standard clearly says it doesn't, but I believe it started in Sheffield with a touch of silver, as a gimmick. I could be wrong because I'm no smith, but I can't think of a chemical reason that silver might help.
