Here's a pic of the edge of a GD fresh from the factory.

A high grit hone like that will round off some of the jagged edges on those burs and spurs, but will not smooth out the profile until sometime around July....

I have taken a new Gold Monkey and a new Gold Dollar 208 to shave ready with a Keen Kutter Kombination barber hone. It has a courser "sharpening" side, as well as a finishing/polishing side. It takes about 200 careful passes on the sharpening side and 10-20 on the finishing side. Then Cro paddle, linen/leather strop. You will have to shave with it and go back to the hone and paddle until you are satisfied with the shave. Mine shave as well as the vintage honed on a full set of hones. I really can't tell any difference.
Not sure if this is possible with a single grit barber hone. If so, it would take much more work. Probably to the point of being ridiculous.

From what I read, you really need to spend some time on the bevel setting on the razor.

I have several Gold Dollar razors that shave every bit as well as my more expensive vintage blades and as well as my Dovos. However, it took a bit of work and I started with a 220 Norton and worked my way up. If on a tight budget, you could get by with Wet-or-Dry sandpaper in various grits from the hardware store. Regarding the shoulder issues, you can get around that by keeping the blade at an angle as you stroke in such a way as to keep the shoulder from riding on the hone.

I wouldn't suggest leaving/ignoring the shoulder if it extends past the cutting edge. Leaving a sharp protrusion is an easy way to give yourself a serious gash. Better to grind it down and leave it dull, and well rounded.

Yes. I almost hate that I got it because it makes me realize the stupid amount of cash I spent on other razors.

This one shaved as well / better than some 10 times its value (post custom point and honing).

    Woe is me!

If it'd ease you mind at all, I'd trade you another honed GD for your Palmera, or Dorko 300....

EDIT: I'd even throw on a new set of scales too!
