There is an ebay seller that has a statement about the Gold Dollar razors he sells. At least he is making it clear that the razors aren't shave ready. He doesn't have much feedback, but his razors are selling for $9.99 shipped. Here is the statement from the webpage:

5.The razors needs to be hone before shave.all you need just only get a fine grit finishing stone or a barber's hone for this.

All I will say is, cheap is just that, CHEAP!!! When you are an advanced user of straights and you want to have fun and experiment, this is just fine. But when you are relatively new to straights and you get one of these, well, just consider that you are using your money to get an education because that is what you are paying for. I can not believe anyone here would compare these to a vintage straight. Will they shave , sure. Will they give as many shaves before touch-ups? You decide that. The only problem I see here is the newer guys thinking they are "cheating" their way into the world of straight shaving and then being disappointed or worse yet, turned off by these. Just my 0.02 and as always,,,, BUYER BEWARE!!

Just cause someone said it on the internet doesn't mean it's true. How many "shave ready" razors do you see on ebay and do you trust those?

I really can't tell any difference.
Not sure if this is possible with a single grit barber hone. If so, it would take much more work. Probably to the point of being ridiculous.

I can't take this any more, honest I tried, sorry

This is me being sarcastic OK??? but you kinda asked for it...

Gosh I feel so stupid here now, I have spent so much time and money on razors and stones and strops trying to get the best feeling edges possible for my razor and your razors that you send me, when all this time I could have just bought some cheap ChiCom razors and a double sided razor hone and done the same thing... Wow I wish I had known this sooner

So anyone who wants to trade their hugely expensive razors, and hones let me know, I am in on that ... I will buy you a 9.99 GD and a double sided razor hone for the trade ... Honest, that's all ya need, there is an e-bay seller saying so...

Come on PLEASE stop !!!! pretty please???? that is just in-experience showing there, in 1 year you are going to wish you could go back in time and erase this stuff...

+1 with Dylan too, if ya leave the heel/shoulder it will either be dull or create a "Hook" that will cut ya...

Excuse me. I was just trying to make it clear to some kid out there, who may not have hundreds of dollars to spend on a razor/hone set up, that they can buy a new razor and hone it to shave ready. I know it can be done because I have done it.

That is EXACTLY what we are trying to make clear too, that it just doesn't work quite that easy...
Don't believe me, go peruse the beginners forum, and the honing forum, read about how hard it really is to get a real edge..
What we were trying to say above my sarcastic post in increasing strength of conviction, was that what you are touting is not the norm....

Obviously this guy sees a dollar sign. He probably trolls the forums and looks for questions like this and then sees that some guy claims that it can be done with a barber hone. Furthermore by making claims like this probably hurts newbies who don't have the money for a bunch of hones by giving them the idea they can do it. They end up in the end spending more money and time than just sending it to a pro for a measly 20 dollars

This is actually was a really good read. Apparently there was a lot of pent-up demand for reasonably quality inexpensive straights. I have to travel a lot and never felt comfortable leaving my dovo in the hotel room.
