Thanked: 1185Razors, like people, gain a lot of credibility with a little patina. I don't remember where, but I recently saw a razor with black and white checkboard scales, it just looked...tacky...kinda new wave, metrosexual, hipster. No Sir, didn't like it. Not a big fan of skinny blades either.

I don't like razors that are too flashy. A lot of gold wash really blows. Oh, and razors with "worked" spines don't do much for me either. Going up and down them with a grinder like that isn't very artistic. I don't like stainless steel scales. Oh, and I dislike bulky scales too. And aside from the vintage English meat choppers, anything over 7/8 is just dumb.

I find square ended scales to be ugly. Two of my best razors have square ends. Are form and function mutually exclusive?

I've had to really think about this one. I like all points, all styles, all materials so long as they go together with the period in which they were made. I enjoy seeing the progression straights have gone through from the earliest to the latest. They are all works of art designed by their creators. They all tend to reflect the times in which they come from. What I find ugly is when somebody mismatches scales to the blade. Say Celluloid on an early stubtail for example or very flashy scales on a very plain blade. All of these styles have their place IMO but the overall razor must all come together to really shine. I do have one exception though........Bolsters......ughhh.......I don't know why but they just make me cringe in most cases. They just look cheap to me.

I prefer the traditional look on razors and knives. Horn, bone and even old plastic/celluloid is ok. Little patina wont hurt my eye. Sometimes rescaling is necessary but i try to be careful what to use with new scales. Old ladies should carry their age with proudness.
I do not like 40 yo women dressing up like 18 yo disco queens either. Maybe i'm just getting old...'That is what i do. I drink and i know things'
