Thanked: 13245Whoops, I was just coming back to re-word that I realized somebody would take that to mean the I was comparing those brands,,, I honestly was not, the Wapi's are far superior in all aspects, other than some have softer/bad steel and perhaps that was a tempering/hardening problem...
What I was saying is that I didn't feel right charging people for custom scales etc: on razors that were not up to the task on many of them... So I stopped taking orders...
Honing any of them for hire was also problematic, because you would never know when you were going to find the heel problem... after doing a few at no charge, because of it.. I gave up on it, because beside my fee to hone there is the shipping costs also, and I just didn't feel right about that being a crap shoot...
Sorry I never meant to group the good Wapi's, in with the DA's and the GD's that is a whole other set of problems but people should by now know of them before they buy...

I wasnt directing the question at Glen was I? If you actually go back and read it was Muscles's claim that I was referring to and objected to. So your comment has as much point to it as a chocolate fire guard. Im well aware of Glen experience with them, from other threads and this one.
Regardless, based on any limited experience that I have had, I have found the do take and hold an edge which renders the former comment by Muscles about their generalisation to be unqualified.
Regardless further, I still do not believe Wapis to be the most overrated razor out there...

Thanked: 1195I might be tarred and feathered for saying this, but here it goes: Dubl Duck Wonderedge.
It is a nice razor, especially in the Duck line, but is it a significantly better shaver than my other razors? Nope. That's the shaveability aspect.
However, there is one aspect about them I haven't really been able to rate, how long they hold an edge. In this department it may be possible that the Wonderedge beats the competition. I've had mine for a year, in that time I've only touched it up once. But then again it is part of a rotation, so I can't say for certain....

The only reason the Wonderedge might be overrated has nothing to do with it's shaving or other qualities but rather the expectations of those who buy them. I guess if I spent what they cost these days I would expect magic from them.
As to the Livi newly ground, I have one and it's an outstanding razor. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Thanked: 1195I think that goes without saying. That's why they are overrated; hype is generated causing curiosity and expectations from a product. Of course said product can not live up to lofty expectations. And we've seen it over and over again here, whether it's DD's or Filly's or Livi's, j-nats, whatever.
Now before everyone gets reactive and starts defending their favourite brands let me say that, IMO, saying something is overrated isn't calling a product crappy, it's just saying something can't live up to those lofty expectations.
Oh, and just for the record, I bought my Wonderedge out of curiosity, not due to some unrealistic thoughts that it is better than every other razor made. I've spent enough time here to know that hyped products hardly ever live up to their reputations. I guess I now know...

Welcome to SRP! Very interesting first post Bill. Sounds like you purchased a LIVI that was abused somewhere along the way. Your razor was probably restored by an inexperienced hand and lost it's temper. In your readings in SPR you probably came across numerous posts warning newbies about EBay razors. There are also any posts referring to the quality of the honing as to how well a razor shaves. Lastly, the quality of a specific razor brand should be measured over numerous razors and not a stand alone representation of the brand. The Double Ducks and other brands mentioned in this thread have a good rating because they have a high average of honing very easily and obtaining a good edge. The DA's, Wapi's and others have a bad rating because many of them have problems in quality, honing and edge retention.
Bottom line, don't gauge a razor's quality on one example especially if it came from EBay. Thank you for sharing your story.“If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got.” (A. Einstein)

Joed,
I know that ebay razors are a crap shoot. I guess what made me overly confident was the fact that it was a Livi and listed as a New Grind. I will try to upload the photo of the razor. If it had been old or vintage I would have been more wary.
At any rate I learned a lesson on this one. I'm sure that somehow the temper was lost. I have seen many vintage razors that were ruined by overly agressive cleaning/buffing. With this razor in hand, I didn't get the feeling that any restoration had been done to it. I was probably wrong. I have been before. Thanks for the reply.
