Thanked: 443I don't think the brands of tape will differ by more than a mil or two. 3M Temflex 1700 is the most abrasion-resistant; it's the preferred tape for making up pulling heads in the field. That is, you fold your copper over the loop you're pulling it into the conduit with, then tape it down so it can't pull free from the loop. Sometimes there are dozens of wires, or just three really really big wires... bottom line, you want tape abrasion resistance inside that conduit. You waste a lot of man-hours when one of your wires breaks free and you have to back the whole damn bundle out.
Far more electrical tape is used this way and then discarded than ever ends up in a permanent installation.
The most expensive tapes are usually the best insulators/have the best adhesive, like 3M Super33. They are not the best for honing because they're not formulated with abrasion resistance as the top priority.
If you don't match the original tape micron for micron, that's OK; the difference in angle is so microscopic that you'll still get a good new bevel from a fine hone eventually. If you're really worried, use two layers and you'll know the new microbevel is all your own.
As an aside, I was happy to discover recently that Smith's honing solution does not dissolve the tape adhesive like the true oils I'd used before. Another plus for that stuff."These aren't the droids you're looking for." "These aren't the droids we're looking for." "He can go about his business." "You can go about your business."

Thanked: 1WOW, great work to all involved.
I have to get one but I'm intimidated as I'm back to beginner status.
When my house was broken into they stole much of my shaving gear including my only straight.
So I haven't used a straight for quite some time. I've been wanting to get back to it so now I'll not only have to pay for this razor, but I'll have to get a Dovo best quality or something inexpensive to get back in the swing of things first before using this fine piece of work.
That's what I get for not ordering one from SRD in Dec. during their special (wife's fault of course )
Again, thanks to all involved with getting this off the ground and to Robert for your excellent work.

This razor will set me back more than all of my other razors combined and maybe even including paraphernalia. However, to support a craftsman and artist by buying functional art is worth it. SRP has been an invaluable resource for me and I expect it will continue to be. Since becoming interested in straight razor shaving, the SRP logo has been the iconic razor only to be dreamed of, at least for me. To have such a beautiful piece become my first custom and the crown jewel of my modest collection, is exciting. With all of that being said, don't tell my wife! I will slowly sell off other items I have to justify financing this and will break reveal it to her slowly...over the years!Last edited by overgripped; 08-23-2012 at 08:32 PM.
