12-01-2010, 11:45 AM #166Razors: Torrey "Our 136" + Heljestrand 5/8
Hones: Naniwa 1K, Unknown "Mid-Range" JNat, Iwasaki Choice Nakayama, Ozuku
Strop: Kanayama (Leather only)
Lather: QCS Vostok + Proraso + Glycerin
Astingent: Thayers Rose Petal
ASB: AOS Sandalwood
EdT: Knize Ten
Today was a test shave for two razors. The Heljestrand I originally purchased "shave ready" off eBay. It always gave a decent shave, but never seemed up to the storied potential of a Heljestrand. The Torrey was a recent eBay acquisition. I took both to the 1k for a bevel set. I forced myself to really take some time here--much more so than I had been doing. It paid off! Once the bevels were set nice and even on both sides and along the length, tested to see if they would cut arm hair and leg hair. Both did so smoothly and effortlessly. I then proceeded to do a progression through my JNats using slurry raised with a meijiro followed by nakyama honzan slurry then water. The only deviation was an ozuku honzan slurry on the ozuku. Both were finished off by 75 laps on the ozuku with plain water.
The lather just had to be tried. The Vostok will freeze your face on its own. Combine it with Proraso--my face was so chilled! If you love a mentholated shave, you GOTTA try this uberlather!
Results: The Torrey gave a very nice shave, but that Heljestrand - WOW! It was one of the nicest and smoothest shaves I have gotten from any blade honed by any of the professionals! I was planning to put the Heljestrand up for sale, now I'm reconsidering...
Great shaves, gentlemen, keep them coming and thank you for letting me share!Last edited by LegalBeagle; 12-01-2010 at 12:36 PM.
