BTW: my colleague and I will be looking at the edge of a blade (that Rene sent) under SEM today. I decided to do a Naniwa regimen (up to 12k). Yesterday, we looked at the "Shapton edge" and it looked a bit "unclean" (lots of pitting, electron dense areas...I think that's because I asked Rene to send me a crappy blade he didn't care about). Scratch patterns looked bizarre. We'll see what the results say today. I will post pictures in the "Edge" thread I started soon

Cool stuff buddy, can't wait to see those images. Thanks for sharing all this, and being so thorough about it too
With the truly impressive range of honing systems you possess now, and with your access to such fine equipment, this will be really good reading!!

    Friday Afternoon shave:

Hot shower as the wife sleeps from watching the Royal Wedding from 3AM.
    Warm Oil
    Hannah Ceramic Bowl
    Nancy Boy Shave cream
    Custom Badger Brush
Joseph Allen and Sons, no XXL Barbers Notch
Honed by me, 1,4,8K progression 12K Naniwa finish
    AOS Aluminum
    Thayers Witch Hazel
    Vaseline for men

I picked this razor up cheap a while back and never honed it. It cleaned up nicely with 0000 steel wool. It had some spine wear so I put on two layers of tape and honed away. It was a tough one but finally shaved arm hair and then I went on to finish and shave with.

It was a nice shave but following a razor honed by Max is not an easy task. So, I think it was sharp enough but probably needs more time on the 4/8/12 as it was a bit harsh. Anyway, least I learning this stuff.

It was not the best shave I have had, but a very satisfying one indeed.

I am off to visit with Rene in the morning!!

My daughters often come with me just for the food and they are a bit older than your daughter. For me, whatever the reason, I enjoy their company.
I guess I'll go back to the 1K and start again, thanks for the advice.

    Jeff,

Thank you for the kind words and the offer of assistance. I think she'll be fine. She saved what was nearest and dearest to her at this point--the only draft of her Ph.D. dissertation. Whew!

Today's shave is as English as I could manage, part of a little coordinated shaving exercise organised by Ralfy.
    Andy,
That is a nice English shave. I love the thumb notch(es) on that blade. I bet it handles well, despite her small size.

Question is: Does she buy what you tell her, LOL? Women are waaaaay smarter than us.

Thank you Birnando...The pleasure is all mine. Once a scientist, always a scientist. You want to take everything to the extreme and see where the edge of that envelope is (literally in this case, LOL). Those impressive honing systems won't mean jack squat if I can't use them right. Today, my friend and I spent almost an entire afternoon taking some "OK" EM images. Problem is that the razor becomes magnetized under all those electrons bombarding the surface and some of the images are a little out of focus ( not as crispy as they should be). But, it's the best we could do under the circumstances. Keep your eyes posted in that thread. I am going through the images as we speak and will select a few that look good, and posting them soon.

And I thought I felt alone in this group. Phewwww!!! My wife slept just a couple of hours. I couldn't give a rat's &%$#@...well you know, LOL.

    Jeff,
Not bad, not bad at all. Congrats on the honing and judging your honing edges to Max' (or another pros edges) are the way to go. That's what I do, but it's hard sometimes as the different grinds and steel provide a different feel. Keep playing...it will come together.

Have fun with Rene. Don't let him convince you to do P90X without a Voodoo doll (he can fill you in as to what I mean, LOL).

I, for one, am jealous. Wish I was there. Sounds like fun. +1 on the bevel
