11-01-2012, 02:30 AM #101Pre-Movember shave.
As I had hoped, I was able to send myself into Movember with a couple of new goodies to try out: Mitchell's Wool Fat soap and Captain's Choice Bay Rum, and I'm very happy with both.
Location: Ottawa, Ontario
Razor: Wade & Butcher For Barbers Use
Brush: Whippeddog silvertip
Soap: Mitchell's Wool Fat
Scuttle: Robert Baker 002 in Lava Slate
Shave: 3 passes, WTG/XTG/ATG
Astringent: Thayers Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera
A/S: Captain's Choice Bay Rum
Result: couldn't be happier with my new soap and AS. Great way to head into Mo season. Sadly pics of shaving actual Mo didn't turn out, so this is as close as I got.
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Prep: Warm Shower
Brush: AoS Pure Badger
Soap: SRD Lime
Bowl: Sauce bowl with soap melted into it.
Razor: 5/8 French point F. Westpfal Gold Beetle 500
Strop: No strop today
Shave: WTG, XTG (ATG for the neck)
AS: Clubman
ASB: AoS Unscented
Cologne: Armani Code Sport
Result: After 2 lack luster shaves I finally got a shave to talk about. This is my first vintage razor and only my 2nd time using it. I would like to thank gssixgun for hooking me up with a vintage restore. The hone job is so good I didn't even strop it the first time I used it or even this time. I haven't told him yet but I have a another razor headed my way and then his way for some much needed TLC.

Thanked: 485Thursday
Well, I’m going to surprise you all and do something different today. I’m going to use the Shave Of The Day thread to talk about my shave. Last night I came across the Movember thread and decided to give it a go.
As some of you may know, Bailey, my soon to be five grandson, was diagnosed with bone cancer last year, so I certainly see cancer awareness as a worthy cause. To participate in Movember meant of course that I needed to commence November with a clean shaven face; something I haven’t had for almost ten years. I guess it’s worth mentioning at this point that I don’t have a particularly luxurious beard. One might even term it ‘sparse’. I mean, when I got home from work tonight after shaving off my moustache, soul patch and beard this morning my wife didn’t even notice. When I complained bitterly about the un-noticing she said, ‘Well, it probably wasn’t very thick, really’. This statement of fact was received poorly by myself, esp as it was followed rapidly by ‘You look much older, you know’. Then ‘You look horrible’, and when I said ‘F*&k off Cindy, it’ll grow back’ she replied ‘but it’ll take you a year to grow it back Carl’. Again, I can’t really disagree. This Movember thing is painful.
Regardless, it must be said that the J H Hellberg Frameback performed admirably, esp considering I didn’t trim the length with an electric hair trimmer at all, I just dove right in. I’d never shaved my top lip or bottom lip with a straight before and had shaved my chin with a straight only once. I did alright; no nicks at all. The top lip was tricky; esp near the nose, and so was the soul patch. I enjoyed myself and did two passes. I did a full strop ½ way through (30/70). I think maybe the razor could do with a small touch up of 20 laps on the Shapton 16k now before my next shave with it.
Of course I’ll grow the whole lot back, and given the feedback above I guess you know why…
Razor: J A Hellberg Frameback | Überlather: BS Macca Root/ C&E Nomad/glycerin | After Shave: D R Harris Bay Rum | Hair Tonic: Pashana

Thanked: 146Impatience leads to bad juju...
Prep: Hot Shower, Proraso pre
Scuttle: G5
Brush: AOS Pure Badger
Soap: Tabac
Razor:Peaso 'Tuesday' 11/16" round point
Post: Witchazel splash, cold water splash, Proraso AS, Every Man Jack Lotion
Result: I took a chance on a Peaso razor from the bay. Still not sure if I should have passed but we will get to that... I was excited to get home after yet another 12 hr. day at work. We have been swamped and have at least 4 other projects in addition to the normal stuff to get done before spring. But I am glad to be busy. Like Carl said," First World Problems"...LOL. So I get home and SWMBO is off visiting one of her friends so I see an opportunity for a quick hone on the new razor and a test shave in the morning. Thought I had it honed up, but after 2 passes the edge went away. Of course I stubbornly 'powered' through the 3rd pass and this is probably the worst shave in 2 years, seriously, it was that bad. No cuts or irritation, but stubble, and not smooth. Enough whining though, it was my own fault for trying to hone quickly instead of setting a good bevel. Guess that will make me appreciate the great shaves I usually get.
If that is my major problem for the day, I will be all right.
Hope every one is doing OK after stupid Sandy.
Glad to hear Jeff and Bill are still shaving away!

My first complete straight razor shave.
Soap: Palmolive stick
Brush: Boar brush
Razor: Schulze Selbstfahrer full hollow.
Shave wasn't super close since it was only my first full shave with a straight but on my cheeks I really got a good shave. The neck area was harder to do.
Got 2 nicks out of stupidity. One on my upper lip and one my jawbone. (Must remember to turn my face before I place the razor on my face =D )
