I drop by cigar shops every now and then to check for cool looking cigar boxes. I was very surprised at the quality of woodwork on some boxes. The shops usually have at least one stack of empty boxes for very cheap. Many of them the perfect size for razors (7 day set boxes...?).
I dust them out and put a couple few coats of epoxy and on some I make a rubber gasket seal but it's not necessary. With some silica it keeps the razors nice and dry.

MikeT, you've given me an idea to visit a few tobacconists. A cigar box wasn't something I'd considered. Good call mate!

The coats of epoxy are a good idea. Silica gel can destroy unfinished timber IME.

Does it dry out the wood? You do mean wooden straight razor scales? That makes me wonder if it dries out ivory or other materials too much.. gonna have to look into stats online. I know the silica only removes so much, but it could be too much...? Epoxy finished wood is considerably less affected, among other finishes, and so one would need be selective.

Yes it dries out the wood. I was referrring to the box as I had one dry out & crack but now you mention it any unsealed organic materials like bone etc may be at risk too.
I don't know if the amount of silica makes a difference but I had a thick bed of it in the box.

I keep the razors that are in the rotation in wall cabinets in the bathroom.
    My strops are elsewhere.

I keep my strops in the closet. I keep 4 razors in my razor box ready to use. the other razors I keep in the safe. it takes about a month to use the 4 in the razor box after that I replace the 4 with 4 out of the safe. I clean and oil good the ones I used and put them in the safe and so on until I have made it through the collection.

I keep mine in a wall cabinet similar to what Pete has. It is actually a hinged shadow box that I got at a craft store. The box is hung on the wall in my bathroom near the sink. I keep a silica packet inside to keep excessive moisture out. So far I have not seen any rust. If I get a chance this weekend I will add a photo.
